A little about our own Charné Petersen:
I’m a DJ, poet, writer, and moment manufacturer from Johannesburg, South Africa.
My most prized possession is the Twilight soundtrack burnt onto a CD by my best friend’s older brother and gifted to me in 2009 when I was 13 years old. If my house were on fire, that’s what I’d grab… before my inhaler.
That CD was my first introduction to alternative music. It’s a landmark along sonic memory lane that set off a chain reaction, leading me on an exploration of new genres and pen holding — I wrote for the first time after listening to Andria by La Dispute.
To me, music has always been a form of world-building. When I listen, I hear my own experiences reflected in the voices of others, giving more confidence to my own.
The opportunity to DJ at Emo Night is an adolescent dream come true. These are the same songs I once listened to alone, scream-singing behind a closed door, convinced no one could possibly understand me. Now I get to play them for a crowd of people who do.
And honestly, it makes perfect sense. I’ve always been the person who hops into an Uber and immediately asks, “Hey, can I connect to your Bluetooth?”
