Terrence âTerryâ James Stamp 1945-2026. Iâm still devastated from Jesse Hector passing away this past week. Two of my musical heroes and two wonderful guys that I had the pleasure of knowing and having on my label. As much as Jesseâs passing hurt, Terryâs hurts even more because unlike Jesse, I kept in regular contact and visited him every time I was in LA. Jesse didnât have a phone or email so I could only see him on rare trips to London.
Terry made music for all the right reasons. I believe the most pure reason for making music is that itâs something inside you that you just have to get out, whether or not anyone hears it. After you complete that song, itâs a relief, and you canât wait to get the next one out of you. Itâs a purge of emotions and part of your soul.
Terry started his music career in the early 60s in various local rock n roll groups around London. A little later, he was playing bass for Mike Rabin & The Demons, the house band for the Wimbledon Palais, who had the opportunity to open for the likes of Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones, just to name a few. Check out their excellent single âHead Over Heelsâ b/w âIâm Leaving Youâ 45, cut in a single 30 minute recording session at Abbey Road. After the Wimbledon Palais closed in 1967, Terry became a songwriter for Schroeder Music Publishing, after a brief spell as a banjo player in a jug band. There, he met John Fenton who would put him together with Jim Avery (ex-The Attack, Thunderclap Newman) to form Third World War. Terry and Jim commenced to writing and recording demos in Fentonâs flat. TWW cut two incendiary albums of authentic working class rage that were far, far ahead of their time. TWW called it a day by late spring â73. Terry resurfaced in July 1975 with his debut solo album, Fatsticks. I cannot stress enough the greatness of this woefully neglected LP.
Terry emigrated to the US by summer â75 and never stopped writing and recording until the very end. He loomed large in my life and I cherish every minute we spent together. Rest easy, Terry.
Special thanks to @dr_faustroll & @theheavyjamz for helping spread the gospel according to Terry.

âFrom the start of their set, with Edâs rumbling guitar playing accompanied by Jimâs loose marching band drums gradually increasing in pace and intensity during âMiraclesâ, it is immediately apparent the rendering and recontextualisation of these songs in duo mode is far greater than the sum of the performers onstage.
Their combined years of experience are reflected and embedded in these performances, which hold up very well against those usually done by larger ensembles.
There is a beauty and grace in Jimâs poetic drum fills as he subtlety juggles a drumstick with one hand contributing a fluttering, butterfly-wing drumming to âThe Ruinsâ. âEverything That Fliesâ is unrestrained, more chaotic before a contrasting, contemplative âDemolitionâ.â - @scenestr

Iâm happy to announce the great Ed Kuepper & Jim White are coming to play in LA and New York in November! Ed Kuepper, the brilliant songwriter/guitarist behind legendary bands The Saints and Laughing Clowns, and Jim White of the fucking Dirty Three and Venom P Stinger and countless others. This is a duo of dreams. I had the incredible luck of being able to see them at the Sydney Opera House and it was one of the most memorable gigs ever. I was tasked to help organize these two gigs for them on the heels of Edâs return to the states after an eon with his band The Saints â73-â78. Ed and Jimâs album After The Flood on 12XU is so amazing.. I honestly cant explain how exciting these gigs are. And opening the shows is Mick Harvey! For his first ever US shows! The true wizard of The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party among many others including Edâs new Saints outfit. These gigs are NOT TO BE MISSED. Do not not snooze on them! Go get yr tickets from 2220 Arts & Archives and TV Eye before they sell out!!
