Aristotle thought you become good by practicing being good. He was right. He was also missing something that took 2,400 years and an fMRI machine to find. New Substack article up (judbrewer.substack.com).
Many people spend years in therapy trying to pinpoint the exact moment or reason their addiction or anxiety started. In this episode of RECOVERable, host Terry Maguire speaks with Dr. Judson Brewer (Dr. Jud) about why searching for the "why" might actually be holding you back from real change.
Dr. Jud explains that while our history and lived experiences are incredibly important, the initial trigger-the "why"-is not what keeps a habit going. The "why" merely sets the loop in motion; it's the habit loop itself that maintains the behavior. To break free, we have to look past the origin story and focus on the mechanics of how our brain is currently operating.

A patient described his perfectionism to me like this: "I'm a gambler going deeper into debt, thinking the only thing I can do is gamble more."
He wasn't talking about money. He was talking about his workday.
I've come to think perfectionism isn't a standards problem or a character flaw. It's a calibration problem. The measuring instrument is broken, and no amount of output fixes the reading.
