8 weeks post op, checking in with my guy Glenn @wimboston . Muscles are waking up and starting to get sore from the increase in activity after the time off. Feeling 💪
Can you run with a labral tear?
Sort of…most people have labral tears and they aren’t an issue or they are manageable. Mine was very manageable for a while. I got my first MRI in 2014 when I was 32 and it showed a small labral tear. I then got another MRI in 2020 which also showed a labral tear. Symptoms were intermittent and pretty predictable for most of those years. After hard efforts and long workouts I would be sore the rest of the day, sometimes limping around. By the next day I would feel fine and back to pain free for the most part. I did 7 Ironmans, over 20 Half Ironmans and a Marathon during this period. I’m not sure what changed but this past Summer the soreness started lingering and getting worse. I noticed it much more and not just with workouts. Playing with my children and bending forward suddently was extremely uncomfortable. Another MRI this past Fall confirmed I still have a labral tear. After consulting with an Orthopedist and my family I opted to get it surgically repaired. I’m excited, nervous, anxious, etc……all the feels.
Ian @wimboston talks about our clinicians walking the walk and being able to relate to our patients and their training and racing. Now I get to walk the walk going from surgery to rehab and back to racing again in the future.
I did my first marathon just about 20 years ago and I’m hoping I can get another 20 years out of the new hip.
A day in the life of a Sports/Running Physical Therapist. Below is yesterday’s case load at @wimboston . If you are active (especially a runner), you need to see a PT that specializes in Running and active lifestyles.

A few weeks late but Maine 70.3 was a blast. Downstream river swim ✅
One of the best bikes I’ve had in a 70.3 ✅
Cramped on the run and working on it 👎
Thanks @coachjorgee3 at @freespeed_lab for the fast new position, @surpas_official for the comfy speed suit, @ventumracing for the fast bike, @tririg for the fast and comfy front end!
When you don’t have the race you want its ok. Remember your why and why you do this. Remember all the people who you’ve met along the way all those who have supported you.
Western Mass 70.3 was a hot and humid day for me and I suffered, but I will be back.
