The incomparable Rickey Henderson was one of my first baseball heroes. So when my buddy Rick Ryba and I heard he was playing semi-pro ball several years after being released by the Dodgers in 2003, we raced down to San Diego State to catch Rickey’s first game as a Surf Dog. Rickey, 46 or 47 at the time, blasted a homerun, walked and stole a couple of bases. He then hung around after the game and signed autographs for everybody. I know they say you should never meet your heroes, but I’m sure glad I met mine. RIP Rickey
