How do you stay on top of your financial paperwork?
Last month, when I asked for your help dealing with my “paper mountain” and going digital, I was deluged with helpful messages, tips and requests.
You might think dealing with “life admin” is a boring topic but it’s a very necessary one. Even so, I was amazed at the level of engagement on that post - off the charts!
Lots of female followers told me that this is part of the “mental load” that they’re having to manage with little help from their partner (though I was glad to get lots of messages from followers saying they DO share the load - hear hear).
My quest was prompted by our house move - but I know that many of you also want to deal with piles of paper, AND are struggling to stay on top of digital communications as more and more firms move to paperless billing. The hidden and dispersed nature of digital documents make it all to easy to miss reminders and renewals - and that can cost us money.
My Saturday column today in @ft_weekend looks at how I did it, and highlights two new female-founded apps, @doqithq and @fyio_app that you (yes, you!) told me you are using. I’ve given them both a go, and I’m impressed. The ability to use tech to share the load with your partner is very welcome - DoqIt is introducing more functionality in this area very soon, so watch this space!

Can I create my own categories?
Yes. But this question is more interesting than it looks.
Because what people are really asking is:
“Can I organise life in a way that actually matches how my life works?”
Not generic folders.
Not someone else’s system.
Your life.
→ Kids
→ Pets
→ Home
→ Health
→ Whatever matters to you
Because the problem isn’t that people don’t try to organise things.
It’s that most systems don’t fit real life.
So they break.
And everything ends up back in emails, photos… or your head.

We needed our marriage certificate twice this week.
Two completely unrelated things.
Same document. Same day.
I knew where it was.
Gary didn’t.
Which is exactly how this works in most households.
One person knows.
The other assumes.
And that’s fine… until they need it.
Because then it’s not simple.
It’s cupboards.
Folders.
The wrong place first.
Trying to remember where it was last time.
All for something you’ve had for years.
And this is the bit people don’t talk about:
It’s not that things aren’t organised.
It’s that they’re not shared.
So the moment someone else needs them…
everything slows down.
Ours was in the purple folder in the cupboard in the office.
Which works perfectly.

Slightly surreal moment this weekend… I found myself in The Sun 🗞️
But what interested me most wasn’t the feature.
It was the topic.
The “sandwich generation” — people juggling children, parents, finances and everything in between.
Because underneath that is something I see every day:
It’s not that people are disorganised.
It’s that life has become administratively full.
Subscriptions quietly renewing
Policies ticking along in the background
Documents you need at the worst possible moment
Deadlines you only remember when it’s too late
It’s constant.
And most of it sits invisibly… until it doesn’t.
