My Grandpa Bob would have been 92 today and I’m grateful he passed down his love of four part harmony! This song is in honor of him and also the first of a series I’m calling 🥺“Covers I Cry To”. 😢 (explanation below) Lately I’ve been trying to work on feeling the less pleasant emotions as they inevitably come up, instead of immediately jumping to the first silver lining I can find, which is sometimes my tendency. I have a hard time allowing myself to access negative feelings and music is one way I find myself truly feeling without being able to help it. So isn’t it a bit ironic a song about smiling through the tough times is one that did it for me... Much of the song’s melancholic lyrics and melody makes feel me happy and hopeful, but it also leaves me questioning the overall message. With lines like “You’ll get by”, “hide every trace of sadness”, “what’s the use of crying?” It arguably toes the line of “toxic positivity”… but I think its’ a little more complex than that. To answer the posed question: there is actual scientific evidence that tears contain stress hormones that we are relieved of when we cry…so very useful indeed! But on the other side, there’s evidence showing that manually lifting our facial muscles used to smile can cause our bodies to produce endorphins as if we are actually happy. So maybe the song has a point… I’m becoming increasingly aware that it isn’t as simple as putting on a happy face. Our emotions tell us something and deserve space to be listened to, within ourselves and for one another. And at the same time, each of us gets to choose what we think about the feelings that arise and how to respond to them. I hope this post/song/video gives you a moment to check in and be present with how and what you’re feeling, and how you’re feeling about how you’re feeling. This feels weird to say (indicative of the post?): I hope you can cry *AND* smile sometime soon. #barbershop #cover #smile #cry

“Canada Day” by Emperor X I can’t quite tell why this song grabbed hold of me the way it did, it’s quite silly and a little absurd. But I’m so grateful Mr. Gabriel Meyer showed it to me, and wanted to share it with the world (or at least a small digital part of it) for him on his birthday. I wish I could still hear my friend play this piano, and I promise to make many much music with it, just as he would. Happy birthday @gahbee.gool

From waaay back in the archives: 2/25/2012 - two teenagers not yet old enough to drive perform at their local coffeeshop’s open mic (S/O to @sozocoffeehouse which is still a great first date spot). They play/sing and 3 covers of their favorite folk duo @thecivilwars because they shared a love for sweet harmony, acoustic vibes and emotional lyrics and style. Fast forward 14+ years from these videos and wouldn’t ya know, those two (who had major crushes on each other then) are still at it. TONIGHT @maryanne.muglia releases a new song “Crazy for You”!! It’s a fun, feel good song, we had a blast writing it together, and I’m honored to be featured on it. I just want to make sure that the playfulness of the lyrics doesn’t diminish or devolve my true and intense love for my wife/life partner into hyperbole. We’ve experienced life and loss, joy and sorrow, ruts and peaks, excitement and joy as well as hurt and suffering, all together. I’m so grateful to and in awe of her as the wonderful mother, musician, educator, artist, and person she is. She is the harmony to my melody, and because of that I can’t wait to keep singing. Hope you enjoy the song 🥰 & Happy Valentines 💘

My parents wrote a musical, “Jubilee 2000” over 25 years ago to celebrate the turning of a new millennia, telling the story of so many inspiring people, and to bring hope and joy to its audience (and cast/crew). It’s being performed again and you can come!! There has been so much care and preparation put into this by them and so many others and I’m excited to be part of it it’s revival (I was 1 when they wrote it👶). I’m also grateful that they are including the song I wrote “Testify to the Light”, and the chorus sounds amazing (sneak peek in 3rd video). Get tickets at /e/jubilee-2000-25-revival-one-night-only-tickets-1708881262859 Or google “Jubilee 2000 (+25) Revival - One Night Only” I hope to see you there :)

Today, I give you MBLR part 3 - the final trio of songs from my @mblr.project , a musical exercise I embarked on almost five years ago, in order to practice expressing myself and learn to better use my “voice”. The last two songs, only if I have to and whaddayaknow, in particular feel the most authentic to me and also the most vulnerable, which is probably why they’ve taken me the longest to show the world. Many of the people I am close to have heard me talk about releasing these songs for a long time, and I’m excited/anxious/relieved it’s finally happening. A BIG thank you to all the people who helped make these songs come to life, both in the studio and live, especially @mixedbyalejo for your awesome production and @maryanne.muglia for your inspiration/support. To those who didnt know, these latest additions make a total of 9 whole tunes (omg wow) you can find on Spotify or Apple Music @domsmitty . If you haven’t already, I’d love for you to check them out and let me know what you think! I will also be sharing about each song individually on the @mblr.project page if you’d like to take a deeper dive (at your own risk). Now it’s time to start again, looking forward to writing, collaborating, sharing, and, creating, and music-ing more :) P.S Happy Valentines Day MA whaddayaknow I love you
