For years, it lived silently beneath the forest floor… waiting for the perfect monsoon night.
The cicada emerges from the earth, transforms, and fills the rainforest with one of nature’s most powerful sounds.
A short life above the soil… but a voice the entire forest remembers.

Randy Lanier is a prominent figure whose life defines the high-stakes intersection of professional motorsports and large-scale narcotics trafficking in the 1980s. Born in Virginia and raised in South Florida, Lanier’s meteoric rise in racing was fueled by his clandestine career as a marijuana smuggler. Starting as an amateur, he quickly ascended the ranks to win the 1984 IMSA Camel GT championship with his self-funded “Blue Thunder Racing” team, famously outperforming major factory-backed teams like Porsche and Chevrolet. His racing career reached its pinnacle at the 1986 Indianapolis 500, where he finished 10th and earned the prestigious Rookie of the Year title. However, his “double life” served as his undoing; the massive amounts of cash required to maintain a top-tier racing team without major corporate sponsors eventually drew the attention of federal investigators, who discovered his role in a multi-million dollar smuggling operation.
In 1988, Lanier was convicted under the “Super Drug Kingpin” statute and sentenced to life in prison without parole for conspiring to distribute over 300 tons of marijuana. After serving 27 years in federal prison, he was granted a surprising early release in 2014, a move largely attributed to shifting legal perspectives on non-violent drug offenses and a cooperation agreement with the prosecution. Since his release, Lanier has transitioned from a fugitive of the “War on Drugs” to a vocal advocate within the legal industry. He currently serves as an ambassador for Freedom Grow, a non-profit dedicated to supporting incarcerated cannabis prisoners and their families, and has returned to the track as a vintage racer and driving instructor, effectively closing the circle on one of the most cinematic sagas in sports history

About the artist
“ I am Ravi Sharma, a Delhi based street photographer exploring the quiet moments within our city’s beautiful chaos. on weekends i find my rhythm on the pavement. Whether I’m shooting with the soulful Fujifilm Xt30 and its iconic 35mm f1.4, or stripping things back with the pocket-sized Ricoh GR III, photography is my way of slowing down. For me, it’s about more than just a frame, it’s about finding the extraordinary in the everyday.”
