There is someone I see almost every day on my screen: Amy Goodman, with her War and Peace Report on Democracy Now!. It’s part of my daily rhythm, and essential to how I make sense of the world. @democracynow Last November, I saw Amy Goodman's face in the DOC NYC program and immediately circled it. I caught Steal This Story, Please! @stealthisstoryplease at its NYC premiere there. I remember walking out of the theatre feeling hit, in a good way. Awake. Activated. A little angry, a little hopeful. It felt urgent then, and it feels even more urgent now. It really called me to action, and I want everyone who cares about the current state of the world and independent journalism to see this film. And then somehow, many months later, I ended up interviewing Amy herself, along with Carl Deal for DOXA 2026 @doxafestival - what a pinch me moment!! The film takes you inside Democracy Now! and years of reporting on the 'silenced majority', as Amy says. Just truth, pressure, and persistence. Also, she is so lively and vibrant, not what you’d expect from her very serious on-screen presence. We covered a lot! From No Kings protests to You-Know-Who, from DIY distribution strategies to stories about Amy’s grandma. There is something really hopeful about this film, even as it sits with difficult realities. I hope you come watch it at DOXA, Sunday, May 3rd, 5 PM, SFU Cinema and catch my pre-recorded Q&A with Amy and Carl. On February 28, we were proud to host our first event of the year — “@haveyouheardjudisingh Listening Lounge & Fireside Chat” and thanks to the incredible support of the 5X community, the evening was completely sold out! Held during #BlackHistoryMonth, the gathering celebrated the legacy of pioneering Canadian jazz vocalist Judi Singh, whose family history reflects some of the earliest Black and Panjabi settlers in Canada. The evening created an intimate space for community to come together and participate in a curated listening lounge with selections from the documentary soundtrack while reflecting on music, identity, and cultural memory. Our fireside chat featured @rebelinx of @fadetoblackentertainment , delivering his first public talk after more than 30 years of quietly championing Black arts and culture in Vancouver. He was joined by Selwyn Jacob, Executive Producer and Cultural Consultant on Have You Heard of Judi Singh?, whose work with the National Film Board has long focused on ensuring culture is represented with care and respect in film. Moderated by @jessieesidhu , the conversation explored how music can preserve culture, tell the stories of our communities, and connect generations across time. Together, the evening honoured Judi Singh’s legacy while reminding us of the powerful role sound and storytelling play in shaping our collective memory. A heartfelt thank you to our partners @theblackartscentre , @docnorthwest , @isaffcanada , @fadetoblackentertainment , and @vivamantrafilms for helping make this meaningful evening possible. Moments like these remind us why community spaces for culture, conversation, and music matter. 🎶✨ #5XFest #JudiSingh #musiceducation #community

On Saturday, February 28th, join us for an intimate evening of sound, storytelling, and shared history as we gather to celebrate the music and legacy of Judi Singh, the pioneering 1970s Canadian jazz vocalist of Black and Panjabi heritage whose voice and impact deserve to be remembered, felt, and heard. This special listening lounge will be set up at The Black Arts Centre from 6 - 9 PM and is designed as a relaxed, social experience rooted in connection. The night begins with a curated listening of the soundtrack from Baljit Sangra’s acclaimed documentary Have You Heard of Judi Singh?, setting the tone for reflection and discovery. The fireside conversation will explore the deep and often overlooked connections between music, identity, and cultural memory, with a particular focus on the intersections between the Black and Panjabi communities. Through sound, storytelling, and dialogue, we’ll reflect on how music has acted as a bridge across cultures, generations, and diasporas, and how artists like Judi Singh embody those shared histories. Following the conversation, the album will play in full, allowing the space to transform into one of casual listening, quiet reflection, and organic connection. Whether you’re deeply familiar with Judi Singh’s work or discovering her for the first time, this evening offers an opportunity to listen closely, learn collectively, and honour a legacy that sits at the crossroads of culture, resilience, and artistry. Come as you are. Stay as long as you like. Let the music take you to another world. Spots are limited, so be sure to reserve yours now! Showpass Link: /have-you-heard-judi-singh/
