What a wonderful conversation last night around Le français en mouvement: regards croisĂ©s sur la francophonie d’aujourd’hui. It was a pleasure to bring together such thoughtful voices to explore the many ways French continues to live, move, and reinvent itself — across the world and here in the United States. From the global perspectives of La Langue française dans le monde to the community-based stories gathered in Le français autour de nous, the discussion reminded us that French is not only a language of heritage. It is also a language of transmission, creativity, education, belonging, and future possibilities. Many thanks to all the speakers, partners, and participants who made this exchange so meaningful. You can watch the recording here: https://youtu.be/9w86fDrAeno --- TrĂšs belle rencontre hier soir autour du thĂšme Le français en mouvement : regards croisĂ©s sur la francophonie d’aujourd’hui. Spending three days at the Festival du Livre de Paris under the magnificent glass roof of the Grand Palais was both energizing and deeply meaningful. This year’s festival was an opportunity not only to present and share my books, but also to meet readers, educators, researchers, families, and fellow advocates of multilingualism from many different backgrounds. These exchanges reminded me once again why this work matters so much: languages are not simply tools of communication. They are carriers of memory, identity, culture, and possibility. /2026/04/20/three-inspiring-days-at-the-festival-du-livre-de-paris/

Twenty years ago, Jane Ross and I began a collaboration driven by a shared belief in the power of heritage languages to connect communities, cultures, and generations. What started in 2005 with the creation of the French Heritage Language Program in New York has grown into a thriving initiative that has served thousands of students and expanded nationwide as part of the Embassy of France in the United States and Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education’s French for All initiative. Today, we are especially proud to see that journey reflected in Bridging Worlds. This book grew out of a 2011 conference on heritage languages and social cohesion that we organized at the LycĂ©e Français de New York. The conversations that began there—among scholars, educators, and advocates—sparked collaborations that ultimately came together in this volume. Nearly two decades after our work first began, publishing Bridging Worlds together carries deep personal and professional meaning for both of us. The book reflects the extraordinary contributions of scholars and educators whose research helps deepen our understanding of identity, community, and multilingual education. We are deeply grateful to all the contributors, the institutions and communities that supported this work, and the creative talents who helped bring the book to life. Special thanks to Raymond Verdaguer for the magnificent cover illustration. We are also especially thankful to The Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC) for supporting this project from its initial vision through publication. This project is a celebration not only of heritage languages, but also of the collaborations and friendships that make such work possible. Jane, it has been an honor building this bridge together. What an inspiring couple of days at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) 2026 in New York City! đŸ‡«đŸ‡·âœš Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education was thrilled to welcome hundreds of dedicated educators to our booth. It was a pleasure to connect, exchange ideas, and share resources that support and energize French language education across the country. Together with Nathalie Charles and YalĂ©wĂ© TOGO, we highlighted the many initiatives that bring French language and culture to life in classrooms and communities: đŸ‡«đŸ‡· French for All 🎓 Campus France 🎬 CinĂ©School đŸŽ„ Albertine CinĂ©mathĂšque 🌍 TAPIF (Teaching Assistant Program in France)
and many more dynamic programs supporting teachers and students, promoting the arts, music, and literature, and fostering collaboration and transatlantic friendship. We are grateful to the incredible community of educators who stopped by to learn more about how we can collaborate to expand access to French and strengthen global connections through language. Merci to everyone who made #NECTFL2026 such a success — we look forward to continuing the conversation! #NECTFL2026 #FrenchTeachers #FrenchEducation #CinĂ©School #AlbertineCinematheque

Few things are more rewarding than returning to a school where you helped plant a seed—and seeing it flourish. I recently visited PS 5 – Dr. Ronald McNair in Brooklyn, where I helped create the French Dual Language program in 2019, and it was incredibly meaningful to see how much the program has grown and thrived. From the moment you walk into the building, it’s clear that PS 5 is a vibrant, welcoming community. I was impressed by the dedication and creativity of the teachers, the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students, the strong engagement of families, and the clarity of the school leadership’s vision. A very special highlight for me was receiving a gift from the Pre-K students, created in my honor. I am deeply proud and grateful—this thoughtful gesture beautifully reflects the warmth, care, and sense of belonging that define this school. Seeing French language learning in action—from early childhood through the upper grades—was especially powerful. PS 5’s French Dual Language teachers are @huntercollege Master of Bilingual Education graduates, and several have been supported through French for All scholarships provided by @villa.albertine , strengthening instructional excellence and long-term program sustainability. Students were confident, engaged, and joyful, and the classrooms reflected deep professionalism and intentional practice Beyond the classroom, PS 5 continues to build community through events like the upcoming French Book & Toy Swap, which creates meaningful opportunities for families to engage with language, culture, and one another. 📣 PS 5 is currently hiring a 3rd grade French Dual Language teacher and is also planning for future openings in 4th and 5th grade. If you—or someone in your network—may be interested, please contact Instructional Leader Cindi Van Petten at [email protected] Thank you to the entire PS 5 community for the warm welcome and for the meaningful work you do every day to support students and families. It is a privilege to see this program continue to grow. Website: /
