Few things are more rewarding than returning to a school where you helped plant a seedâand seeing it flourish. I recently visited PS 5 â Dr. Ronald McNair in Brooklyn, where I helped create the French Dual Language program in 2019, and it was incredibly meaningful to see how much the program has grown and thrived. From the moment you walk into the building, itâs clear that PS 5 is a vibrant, welcoming community. I was impressed by the dedication and creativity of the teachers, the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students, the strong engagement of families, and the clarity of the school leadershipâs vision.
A very special highlight for me was receiving a gift from the Pre-K students, created in my honor. I am deeply proud and gratefulâthis thoughtful gesture beautifully reflects the warmth, care, and sense of belonging that define this school. Seeing French language learning in actionâfrom early childhood through the upper gradesâwas especially powerful.
PS 5âs French Dual Language teachers are
@huntercollege Master of Bilingual Education graduates, and several have been supported through French for All scholarships provided by
@villa.albertine , strengthening instructional excellence and long-term program sustainability. Students were confident, engaged, and joyful, and the classrooms reflected deep professionalism and intentional practice
Beyond the classroom, PS 5 continues to build community through events like the upcoming French Book & Toy Swap, which creates meaningful opportunities for families to engage with language, culture, and one another.
đŁ PS 5 is currently hiring a 3rd grade French Dual Language teacher and is also planning for future openings in 4th and 5th grade. If youâor someone in your networkâmay be interested, please contact Instructional Leader Cindi Van Petten at

Thank you to the entire PS 5 community for the warm welcome and for the meaningful work you do every day to support students and families. It is a privilege to see this program continue to grow.
