For this project ‘Echoes of Mourning’, I chose to create a video centred on my partner @djmourn and his music practice. The majority of the soundtrack was composed using a field audio recorder on the day of filming. ”I like to layer various natural, textural sounds to create rhythmic patterns that form a basis for tracks. These sounds can be manipulated and arranged in a way that brings organic depth to music that is hard to replicate with other methods. Combining these with subsonic and atmospheric ambient sounds allows me to shape deep and spacious soundscapes that feel natural and cohesive without being cluttered or overwhelming”.
Because layering is an essential part of his process, I chose to mimic that by using multiple layers of footage stacked on top of another.
My intention was to capture his essence while withholding certain details in order to maintain a sense of mystery.
As this was my first attempt at filming/directing, and editing, the project presented several challenges, the most significant being the need to learn an unfamiliar program within a short timeframe. Time management also proved difficult, as compiling footage and editing required more organisation than I had anticipated. In future projects, I plan to allocate additional time for both these stages to ensure I remain on schedule and avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Film clip for the title track from my new album Cross To Bear, out next Friday. Thank you to the inimitable @redvelvetsofa for the edit. Youtube link in bio.
