Poem in December
It was, he said,
His thirtieth year to Heaven.
I’ve wondered a hundred
Times if Heaven was meant
As optimism, or if a more
Euphemistic irony underlies
The reference paradisic. What
I mean to say is, was he skipping
All a-droll up those slopes
expecting to ascend towards
Some eventual pinnacle?
Because I know only the one hill,
and I’ve been thirty years falling
headlong down it, but I still
have not reached the bottom.
