Wonders of our oceans and Plymouth’s marine heritage will light up Plymouth city centre this week, and I'm so happy to have my Plankton Light Sculptures in the fellow oxygen providing trees as part of the programme! Mine will be among several captivating light installations that show off the scale and wonder of the oceans while celebrating Plymouth’s intrinsic bond with our waters.
Each artwork, from today until Saturday, will be positioned in Plymouth’s Civic Square - surrounded by buildings woven into the city’s history. The installations evoke that heritage while echoing the city's connection to the seas, and how we approach our public spaces and marine heritage in the future.
Huge thanks to Plymouth Culture, who commissioned my installation, in partnership with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park with funding from Historic England’s HAZ programme.

Collide 150 x 150 cm, gloss enamel, 2011
This photo of my painting was taken on 2 June 2011 tech tells me - which is my dads birthday - he would have been 77 years old in 2011 as he was born in 1934. The combination of one of my favourite numbers ‘7’ in 77 and his birthday means a lot as this painting is especially significant to me.
‘Collide’ came out of a difficult and important time in my practice, a period that I describe as my “dark night of the soul.” It was a time of unravelling as I had come to the point where I was in turmoil, questioning all of my work; every colour, every gesture, my very reason for being I felt in my studio in the Elephant and Castle.
Then something shifted, and it became a time of strength and joy because I found the central motif of my work; and I had crafted a way out of my darkness.
For me the form of the circle represents the feminine in all of us and the form of the square represents the masculine and the curve and the straight line in fact form key components in any composition; softness and structure - held in tension and balance.
My key motif is of two semi-circles within a square, contains the essence of my subject matter: relationship - and the space between us.
So much that is meaningful occurs in that space in between. And it is this gap - this charged interval - this delightful pause - that moves me deeply.
Collide was the first painting I made using my motif of the two semi circles in a square. It marks an extremely important turning point in my practice - so it’s very close to my heart; a moment when doubt transformed into direction. And for that reason it remains one of the most important works I have made.
And it feels especially meaningful that I’m sharing ‘Collide’ today as I am getting ready for my upcoming show in New York and I chose this as the title for the exhibition:
