As some of you may know, I wrote a travel guide to Hudson Valley and the Catskillsāsomething I think everyone should check out because I love these places (and was reminded I should probably plug on National Book Day), but also to let you know that you should get your hands on a copy while you still can because it sounds like my publisher is not presently planning on doing a reprint!
I was definitely not in an awesome place mentally when this book came out in 2020 and we immediately went into lockdown. Promoting it became a huge burden for me at the time because I was so broken as a human being that I couldnāt even appreciate what an amazing accomplishment it was having my book in every major New York retailer because no one was here and I couldnāt do any signings.
Today, revisiting it feels brand new, reminding me of what an incredible adventure it was researching and writing this book. There is so much history here and so many little hidden enclaves that you could truly live here your whole life and not see it all. Since then, I still discover new things that surprise and delight me every time I go up, and Iām grateful to everyone who helped make this book happen.

In the process of making this, I narrowly survived a tornado, flying through two hurricanes, a pandemic, a break up/down, several emotional fires, an existential crisis, losing 60 pounds, being displaced out of my suitcase, watching my body age and deteriorate before my eyes, observing erosion slipping like sand through the hour glass of the days of our lives, absorbing the pits of hell and transcending space and time, ripping apart the seams of everything I built and resewing it like Selina Kyle, going into the depths of my tormented foundational trauma, all while operating across 10 counties and several time zones, cleaning up my act, putting on a dress, putting on a suit, putting on overalls, putting on mismatched patterns, costume changing like Lady CarCar five-foot-four, demanding #payme and dragging my ragged body to place on a digital altar only to declare: āCan I go on vacation now, and who is coming with?ā

Why are we still doing this in 2026? I would like to add that Iāve been searched before. I have not had an agent so aggressively knock their hands against my genitals while having a dozen agents acting like theyāre detectives on CSI. It was beyond violating and we need to stop normalizing this.

This morning I learned that my mom left us to ascend to the next plane. In December, she suffered a stroke that snowballed into several complications and a dire outlook. Our last moments together were positive: giving her a spa day, playing Beatles songs she loved, reading to her, brushing her hair, holding her hand. I know that she died with dignity and I can live without regret.
At her best, she was full of life and love. She was a talented artist and musician, a flower child, generous with those she cared about, goofy, crafty, resourceful, unconventional, and for better or worse, unapologetically herself. Iām grateful that I have the parts of her that I admired inside me and to have been so unconditionally loved.
When I last saw her, I took all of our family photos home. It made me cry seeing her so happy because most of my life she was so tormented by illness. I never knew what to do for her. I just wanted her to be as free as the photos I had seen of her from another lifetime, when she wasnāt haunted by demons that donāt exist. Every so often, Iād catch a glimpse of that side of her, reminding me that humans are complicated and we donāt exist this neat binary of good and bad.
It gives me comfort knowing that she is finally at peace and no longer suffering. I wish I could have given that to her sooner, or that she had been capable of giving that to herself. She was a stone cold fox with so much promise who was dealt a bad hand, but we were lucky to have each other.
