At Opus 40, sculpture and landscape become one.
Before Harvey Fite envisioned the quarry itself as a monumental earthwork sculpture, he created a series of humanist sculptures meant to inhabit the space: Flame, Tomorrow, Prayer and Quarry Family — works he called The Family of Man. Originally intended to stand within the quarry, these sculptures were later moved to the surrounding grounds, along with Bather and Boy, now located in the Fite House.
Over time, Fite realized the quarry did not need figures to complete it. The bluestone pathways, ramps, terraces, and walls could stand alone as a singular sculptural achievement — a living work of art carved directly into the earth.

As a peer-to-peer coalition of museums, HAHS brings together sites that were the homes and working studios of significant American artists, leveraging collective experience in historic preservation, visitor programming, and community engagement.
Opus 40 is now part of this important group of sites capturing American creative life, bringing the total to 93 HAHS member sites, spanning 32 states.
Opus 40 is a monumental earthwork sculpture created by Harvey Fite (1903–1976) from an abandoned bluestone quarry in the Hudson Valley. 50 years ago today, work stopped on Harvey Fite’s extraordinary sculptural landscape when he died in a tragic accident.
But Harvey’s impact on his community and the art world are still as vibrant as ever, and the heartbeat of his legacy still beats strong, a legacy we at Opus 40 are proud to honor every day.
We’re heartbroken that Community Day has been cancelled today but Mother Nature had other plans. So while she cleanses the stones, we will reflect on the life and work of Harvey Fite, whose dedication and passion continue to amaze and inspire.
