The story of Concrete is centred on homelessness - a wonder and disgrace of the so called “modern age”.
In my time growing up in the city, and my decade plus living in south parkdale, I have met many folks who have survived the streets. Their stories are all too familiar, all too common, all too human, and a collective response to a crisis is wanting and long overdue. The characters in Concrete are real people - Cold Henry and Young Marlon are real, one is toothless, the other had lost most of his fingers to frostbite. I am saddened to say I have met more than a couple of people with missing fingers to this condition.
In a “developed” nation, and one as cold as Canada (though regardless of climate), it should be a documented human rights violation, if not a war crime against the poor, to ALLOW homelessness. We have wealth, we have condos, we have scientific marvels, but the free hands of the market may pull the rug from under us, at any point, if you fall hard enough. Only concrete or a tent to keep you warm, this one goes out to the survivors and the ones we’ve lost ❤️🩹
Observe the not so subtle political undertones of this video, by no accident aligning parallels to a forgotten “gilded age” of commerce that coupled production with a collective suffering for the factory class 🏭
Homelessness is no accident - it is very much intentional, and a stark reminder to never fail industry or the stystem. ⛓️💥
