ROMA ON PAR - a first look at a documentary that is very dear to us.
“This uniform taught me that, in the face of fire, we are all equal - because when someone is in danger, they don’t ask whether I’m Roma.” - Eduard
🇪🇺 The Roma Unit of the European Commission invited us to create a film that challenges stereotypes and shifts the narrative. Roma communities still face the stigma that they don’t contribute to society…
We spent time with Eduard (Romania), Victoria (Bulgaria) and Stanislava (Slovakia). They all carry experiences of exclusion, but each of them has found their own way through it and is now excelling in what they do, contributing in meaningful ways.
Through their different backgrounds, they reflect on what equality and belonging mean to them.
We tried to show both sides of their journeys. The difficult parts. And the closeness within Roma communities. People looking out for each other. That’s what keeps them going. And what pushes them to give back.
Filming this meant a lot to us. We’re really grateful to Victoria, Stanislava and Eduard - as well as their families and friends - for trusting us with their stories.
Love to our crew who put their heart into this.

MOVEMENT SONG - FILMHUIS CAVIA
🗓 June 30th at 20:30
📍 Filmhuis Cavia, Amsterdam
🎤 Followed by a Q&A with Mayıs Rukel & Victoria McKenzie, moderated by Dimitra Alexiou
Movement Song at Filmhuis Cavia will be an evening of queer intimacies, tender archiving, and mysterious adventures.
In this poetic fiction-documentary, heartbroken Noa finds herself following in the footsteps of James Baldwin, all the way from the Netherlands to southern France, St.Paul-de-Vence.
Just as Saffron’s own archive finds a place within Noa’s memories, Noa discovers how Baldwin’s archive lives on in Jill Hutchinson’s home, held by grief and love. Archive can remain a pulsing heart; still communicating, still teaching, shapeshifting, revealing further depths of itself.
Noa and Saffron watch each other’s movements like a game of queer chess. For the purpose of feeling at home, not for conquering.
Beach is a dreamscape of heartbreak. The salty wind, the birds, the clouds, the sun, the sea. The mountain to go tell it on. Many hands and many touches. “I have studied the tight curls on the back of your neck moving away from me.” says Audre Lorde, as Baldwin’s heavy, exposed beams loom just above Noa’s head.
How does a chest expand after a year of constricting sorrow?
How does theory become a ground of healing?
Movement Song is an invitation to come and tentatively touch a piece of archival paper with us, as we contemplate how it is love that holds archive.
We will visit Noa’s journey on the big screen, to remember how we build homespace again and again, despite recurring disregard and destruction.
We would love to have you with us.
🎟 Tickets can be purchased at Filmhuis Cavia right before the screening.
