Last weekend, we watched two of the @villageunderground tube carriages being lifted off the roof—a truly surreal moment. Huge thanks to the VU team for creating such a magical space for so many creatives over the last two decades. My 'studio in the clouds' has been my safe haven for creativity for 16 years, and it’s the end of a very special era. On to the next chapter! ⚡️ Drone footage by Dear Earth Films @demagazine

Today I want to celebrate my friends @futureverything — a forward-thinking cultural agency crafting new ways of living with technology for human and planetary flourishing. Imagining, researching and prototyping alternative futures, their work explores the interplay between ecological crises, cultural narratives, and technological acceleration. Organisations like FutureEverything are a priceless resource for artists and essential cultural infrastructure — needed now more than ever. I was recently lucky enough to be commissioned by FutureEverything, to develop and co-create a community art project in Stockport called Emotional Biodiversity. I was genuinely moved by how the process was supported by FutureEverything with such generosity — thoughtful conversations, real listening, and a belief in where the work might go. I felt met with care at every stage, not just as an artist, but as a person. Organisations like FutureEverything need sustained funding and public backing. Without them, artists lose the spaces where meaningful, long-term, experimental work can happen — and we all lose the cultural imagination that comes from it. Deep gratitude to the whole team at FutureEverything . Please support, follow, and any help them in anyway you can... @futureverything futureeverything.org #FutureEverything #SupportArtsOrganisations #FundTheArts #ArtistSupport #CulturalInfrastructure

Imagine a future human who listens to the world differently… Such a joy seeing Mind Garden on screen again this week at The Queen's College, Oxford, where it was created during my artist residency! Starring the wonderful Ellie Stamp, who I first met during her placement as a lay clerk with the Queen’s College Choir. She brought such magic to the film — helping shape the music and singing beautifully. Ellie also introduced me to her housemate Alex Tay, a fantastic musician who composed and produced the film’s dreamy soundtrack, featuring the brilliant Jess Bull Anderson on trombone. My Queen's residency began last summer with over ten inspiring conversations across the college community. We explored how climate and emotion intertwine — imagining an evolved human who connects with nature through sound. Fragments from these interviews became part of the soundscape, shaping our narrative and bringing it to life. This clip features the voice of Professor of Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience, Mark Buckley, whose creative insights inspired some of the unique sound devices in Mind Garden. Immense thanks to Mark and all my amazing collaborators. A huge shoutout to Becky Beasley and Nick Owen for their incredible support and hospitality, and to the entire Queen’s College team for making it all possible! SOUND ON PLEASE. More clips coming soon! 🎥💚 #ArtFilm #Soundtrack #CreativeCollaboration #WomenInFilm #SpookySoundtrack #BehindTheScenes #FolkHorror #EcoHorror #EmotionalBiodiversity #ClimatePsychology #ClimateArt #BiodiversityLoss #EcologicalAnxiety

"Why are we still denying? Why aren't we taking action?" 'Emotional Biodiversity', our commission with multidisciplinary artist Di Mainstone, highlights and celebrates environmental stories rooted within Stockport communities. Stemming from climate psychologist Caroline Hickman, we have produced an artwork that gives space to Stockport's communities to deeply explore and express their emotions, helping to shape behaviours and provoke action to address climate breakdown. With engagement at its core and community voices as its soundtrack, our collaboration combines creative workshops, interviews, prop-making, film, and digital art, showcasing all the possibilities of what digital art can be. This commission plays a crucial part in our role within Stockport Creative Campus (SCC), working closely with Stockport Council on their bold 3-year initiative transforming the town's heritage-rich historic centre, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to experience and participate in digital arts and cultural heritage. @dimainstone @stockr__m @stockportcouncil @acegram #UKSPF @ndelap @truemixmedia @demagazine @architectsofrosslyn @deltaviolin @chazzatown @lorienedwards @thewellspring_stockport @poss_abilities @coffeechillandspill_support

If you've visited 'Emotional Diversity' at Stockroom, you may have seen some colourful costumes and props on display. Multidisciplinary artist Di Mainstone (@dimainstone ) specially designed these props for 'Emotional Biodiversity' to be worn by the film's main character, The Last. Di’s unique body of work spans film, instruments, installations, public realm, performances, and wearables, and for 'Emotional Biodiversity', Di utilises her background in fashion and technology to bring this character to life, fused with sculpture, music, and dance. The patterns and colours of these wearables are directly inspired by the bulb species from community workshops created by @thewellspring_stockport , @coffeechillandspill_support and @poss_abilities . Get a closer look at these beautifully designed objects as part of our current display at Stockroom, open until 28th September. @dimainstone @stockr__m @stockportcouncil @ndelap @truemixmedia @demagazine @architectsofrosslyn @deltaviolin @chazzatown @lorienedwards @thewellspring_stockport @poss_abilities @coffeechillandspill_support @aceagrams #UKSPF Photography by @richtymon

Commissioned and produced by Future Everything, Emotional Biodiversity is a new art installation that we co-created with Stockport community groups: @thewellspring_stockport @poss_abilities @coffeechillandspill_support The work is on display @stockr__m in Stockport, and it is free to visit until Sept 28th, 2025. Emotional Biodiversity is set in a speculative future where Stockport has been evacuated due to flooding. The story unfolds across two parallel worlds: a physical one above ground, and a digital one below. The digital realm is brought to life with stunning 3D animations by brilliant CGI artist Nicholas Delap, paired with a dazzling soundscape by Architects of Rosslyn (aka Mandy Wigby & Howard Jacobs), dreamy vocals from Charlotte Cartwright, and voices from our amazing community collaborators. I felt very lucky to realise this artwork with exceptional interdisciplinary creatives from the Greater Manchester area.👇 Full team shoutout below — we couldn’t have done it without you! The film follows a fictional character known as The Last (played by performance artist Charlotte Cartwright), a lone wanderer whose beliefs place the highest value on nature. The Last scours the Stockport landscape using homemade instruments designed to seek out sacred bulbs, which she stores in her Bulb Bank for safekeeping. Emotional Biodiversity was shaped through a series of community workshops where Stockport residents explored their emotional connections to the town’s landscapes and biodiversity. Participants unearthed and decorated bulbs, which were 3D-scanned and replanted within the digital artwork — organic time capsules of memory and meaning. At its core are interview recordings where people shared memories of the past, their deep ties to Stockport, and hopes for the future. Immense thanks to all our community participants, to the team at Future Everything, to Gwen and the team Stockroom, to all our funders and to my talented gang of collaborators: @ndelap @truemixmedia @demagazine @architectsofrosslyn @lewkdavies @chazzatown @lorienedwards @deltaviolin @simon__stec Mark Elliott @stockr__m @stockportcouncil @futureeverything @aceagrams #UKSPF

Emotional Biodiversity is a brilliant new exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Di Mainstone, created with and for the people of Stockport. It explores how our emotional responses (grief, hope, fear and resilience) can shape our connection to the climate crisis. “I hope that by engaging with this project, people will take a moment to think about their own emotional biodiversity as they contemplate issues like the environmental crisis. Often, we can become overwhelmed by statistics and news reports, and so that way of receiving information doesn’t always lead to change. Climate psychologist Caroline Hickman suggests that when we look at these difficult issues through the spectrum of our emotions, something can shift. It becomes less about the overwhelm and more about personal connection, and that’s where incremental changes can start to happen, in how we live and how we protect and cherish the natural world around us.” - Di Mainstone, artist and filmmaker On display at Stockroom until 28 September, the exhibition is located on the first floor, spread across multiple screens and showcasing the props used and worn by the artwork’s protagonist, The Last. The exhibition is not to be missed - get down to Stockroom and check it out.
