Last chance to see “Not Third but Infinite”, open today, tomorrow and Saturday afternoons. Thank you to @demirian.elen (whose work is also in the show) for her evocative poster design taking elements from the notebooks of artist Michael Lekakis, whose archival material is part of the exhibition. She rendered a custom title font from Lekakis’ handwriting and overlaid it onto a recreation of one of his notebook pages before adding fragments of land and foliage to reflect tropes and motifs that define the show.
Besides being an artist, Elen has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer since she was a teenager, and continues to support herself that way. When Díla first started working with Elen we began with six months mentorship by @patchill , a multi-faceted creative practitioner with many years of graphic design experience for clients ranging from UNESCO and Sharjah Art Foundation to the University of Montreal and the Goethe Institute.

You are warmly invited to join us this Saturday @the_demos_center for a guided tour of our current exhibition ‘Not Third but Infinite’. This group show explores the complexities of life between cultures, co-curated by @acgartcollection and @dilafutures , featuring posthumous, established, and emerging artists all of whom were raised away from, or have transitioned out of, their homelands - reflected in diverse ways through their wide-ranging works.
The walk-through will be led by Díla founder @kasiasophia accompanied by the artists, and is free and open to the public.

Bhabha’s concept of the Third Space, expanding his idea of a blended and imagined place between cultures into an opening towards a sense of infinite re-creation, similar to the potent psychological power of the utopia, with its position of perpetual potential.

The exhibition “Weightless” portrays Doreen, Memory, Damla, Aram, Zukaa, Sabri, and Elen, the artist herself, as agents and subjects of transnational adaptation, looking at how it shapes a person to culturally deconstruct and reconstruct themselves over and over again.

Please join us this Saturday November 22nd 7-9pm for the opening of “Weightless” a new series of paintings by Elen Demirian.
This sequence of portraits and still lifes conveys the stories and characters of people in transition, between cultures, and coming from hybrid origins - painted through the lens of the artist’s experience as a young Armenian currently based in Athens.
As Elen sits with her portrait subjects, she draws out elements of each sitter’s journey through their conversation, and then seeks to communicate these aspects through her choice of detail and colour. Their experiences of transition and personal stories are represented in this show as a collective portrait of cross cultural identities and lives in constant flux.

This summer we happily welcomed new Dila resident @demirian.elen to WiPS in support of her ever-developing painting practice. Originally from the Armenian capital of Yerevan, Elen is in Athens with the Education Unites scholarship program for her Visual Arts BA at Deree American College of Greece.
Elen is the second studio resident through our ongoing collaboration with the @dilafutures network founded by @kasiasophia , pictured here with Elen, to support young refugee women pursuing creative career paths. Both WiPS and Dila are very grateful for the generous patronage from Irene Y. Panagopoulos Collection for supporting Elen’s residency for the coming year.

It has been our pleasure and honor at Dila to work with @demirian.elen this year, mentoring her across both her fine art practice and her commissioned graphic design and illustration work, through which she supports herself. Coming from the Armenian capital of Yerevan, Elen is an exceptionally talented and committed young artist whose expressive style continues to develop as she explores themes of personal and cultural identity. She is currently based in Athens thanks to a scholarship at Deree the American College of Greece to study for a BA in Visual Arts under the Education Unites program. Last year she was invited to give a live painting performance in Venice by phygital art platform Akneye. So happy to welcome you Elen ♥️
