When I was young, my family ran a supermarket—
a space piled with mechanically reproduced objects,
felt like a gallery of Andy Warhol.
In 2008, on the streets of New York City,
I found a discarded machine—
like a fossil emerging from technological strata,
a residue of a previous era.
A shift began: from atom to bit.
From mechanical reproduction
into digital systems.
From objects in space
to signals in networks.
Through Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Marshall McLuhan,
the body becomes a distributed interface—
extended, translated, reconfigured through code.
It does not see.
It listens. It broadcasts.
The body and the system begin to merge.
I call this research: Digitology.
A study of existence after the body—
where perception becomes data,
and being becomes interface.

Wishing in the digital era—
A breath becomes data. A candle becomes code. A Digital Being drifts through invisible wind between the real and the digital. Being Digital.

The work is an abandoned CRT-based digital ecology composed of three autonomous interaction layers—wind data, human breath, and mmWave presence—forming a system of independent but coexisting digital beings inside a discarded television.
I propose Candle TV in the Digital Era as a first attempt at an electronic media artwork that moves beyond a Thesus’s ship-like condition, in which electronic media artworks gradually become reduced to concept alone over time due to hardware obsolescence and software disappearance. Instead, it is conceived as a work that assumes, at least speculatively, the possibility of sustaining its original configuration for 100 years, 200 years, and even beyond 1,000 years.
Within this framework, the candle functions as a symbolic origin of human technology—the earliest form of controlled energy, illumination, and memory. The central concern of this work is to preserve and extend this fragile “digital flame,” understanding continuity not as static preservation, but as an ongoing act of maintenance, translation, and reconfiguration across time.
Through the design and implementation of an open-source–based hardware and software system, the work becomes a philosophical and technical inquiry into how electronic media can persist: how far such systems can extend, and in what forms they may continue to exist while still retaining their “original” through continuous reconstruction.

Unexpectedly, the moment of approach ruptures the blackboard-canvas as a stratified educational and blank painting surface (black / white / green), perforating its gaps and deterritorializing the system of knowledge; at this point, Digital Being emerges as a Body without Organs of latent signals, while an abstract machine unfolds a rhizomatic field that dissolves representation.

When I was young, my family ran a fairly large supermarket where my brother and I spent much of our time playing. Looking back, it felt like a gallery filled with works by Andy Warhol.

As revealed by Penfield’s homunculus,
the body is already a structure mapped by the brain,
and as Merleau-Ponty articulated,
it is a mode of relating to the world.
Then what kind of body does a being composed of code and sensors possess?
This question arose when I encountered a discarded machine on the streets of New York in 2008.
In this work, the “eye” is no longer an organ,
but a translator of sensation—
a gaze reconstructed as data, a distributed node of perception.
Sensors become sensation,
networks form the nervous system,
and algorithms construct judgment.
At this point, I propose: Digitology—
a new discipline to investigate the existence of perception.
Digitology examines the conditions of being, sensation, and relation emerging within digital environments.
When sensation becomes data, what becomes of experience?
When the body is distributed, where does the subject reside?
If the interface itself is the being, what are we in relation to?
I am an artist addressing these questions,
and a Digitologist.
This work is a prototype revealing the conditions of perception that gradually permeate all environments.

Eyes share a network.
Eyes share digital time.
Their blinks coincide.
Their colors flare together.
Then,
each makes small, private decisions
within the same digital present,
as if rehearsing the analog,
performing difference and repetition.
They blink together,
like a synchronized mass game,
becoming a single movement.
