REPOST
@digit.granny đ Earth Day 2026
On 22 April, I will join 14 brilliant GREEN GRADS at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington to celebrate Earth Day 2026 â a day dedicated to creativity, sustainability, and inspiring the next generation.
I will be sharing my project Digital Grotto, a work that begins in virtual reality and becomes real through 3D printed clay. The installation includes my 3D scanned figure standing before a monolith inspired by Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke â a symbol of stepping into new knowledge and new worlds.
Now that NASA has completed the Artemis II mission, the future feels closer and more tangible. This new era of exploration reminds us that todayâs young people will shape tomorrowâs future. Some of the girls we meet may one day be 3D printing houses on the Moon, using the same principles of layered construction that we explore in clay đ
3D printing with clay belongs to this wider spirit of innovation. It uses only the material required, produces almost no waste, and allows me to design, test, and refine complex forms digitally before I touch the clay. This approach reduces unnecessary prototypes, minimises environmental impact, and encourages a more thoughtful relationship with resources. It is a way of making that honours the deep history of ceramics while embracing sustainable, forward looking technologies.
To honour Earth Day, I will teach the girls the oldest clay technique of all: making coils â and we will see what we create together by the end of the day. Long before VR, printers, or Moon missions, humans built everything from simple coils. The girls will become âclay printers,â building a piece layer by layer, just like the Digital Grotto.
