Crosscurrents and Cross Rhythms, Dialogues on Race, Volume II is a continuing project that originated in 2009 after Gregg August received a joint commission from the Jerome Foundation and the Jazz Gallery in New York City. What began as a commission for a full length concert work, Dialogues on Race was recorded and released in 2020, receiving a GRAMMY nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble album.
Crosscurrents and Cross Rhythms, Dialogues on Race, Volume II will be the second installment of the series.
The idea behind the work is to create musical dialogue or conversations which discuss race relations in the United States. Through the melodies, arrangements and improvisations, a full discourse takes place.

What happens when a single trombone meets a space that can hold every note for 40 seconds?
Grammy-nominated trombonist Andy Clausen has been answering that question for a decade — in a 16th-century Italian chapel, in a seven-story railroad water silo in Colorado, on Meyer Constellation systems. On April 18th, he arrives at Studio 9 to spend five days inside our immersive spatial audio system. On April 22nd, he plays.
This performance will be captured as a live recording.

Thrilled to spend a week in North Adams, MA in residence at @freshgrassfoundation / @studio9porches , culminating in a solo performance and live recording Wednesday April 22nd!
Huge thanks to @digifiddler for making it possible. Excited to explore the immersive possibilities of the studio’s Meyer Constellation sound system to further develop my solo practice.
Thrilled that my friend @EdenRobins stopped by today in pursuit of some character research for her new novel!
Crossing disciplines is one of my favorite things — sharing our work with each other was so rewarding.
With a solo project taking me to Cambodia later this year, I’ve been pulled hard toward Michael Tyson’s @loopypro Pro. For flexibility, reliability, and fun, there is simply nothing close.
My travel rig: iPad, @eventideaudio H90, @rme_audiousa Babyface Pro, and a @musekinetics SoftStep 3 — the lightest setup I’ve ever traveled with, by far.
Loopy Pro is unbelievably complete and perfectly executed with a satisfying learning curve.
Add to that countless videos from amazing content creators plus support communities on Facebook, Discord and its own site, and I’ve got an endlessly rewarding new instrument.
Anyhoo — fiddle is in the hospital this week, so I grabbed my ’93 Strat and have been making loops to learn the ropes of MIDI mapping and patch design.
Eden had some fun swiping them in and out of sonic presence and so did I.
Good times. More soon Eden!
For the last decade, trombonist Andy Clausen has been investigating what happens when you place a single instrument inside spaces with extraordinary acoustic properties — a converted railroad water silo in Colorado, a Renaissance chapel in Italy, Meyer Constellation immersive sound systems. Each environment reshapes the instrument in ways you can’t predict until you’re inside it.
On April 18th, Andy arrives at FreshGrass Institute’s Studio 9 in North Adams, MA for a five-day artist residency inside our Meyer Constellation spatial audio system. On April 22nd, he performs — solo trombone and live electronics in full immersive, moving, sound. The performance will be captured as a live recording.
Andy is a founding member of Grammy-nominated brass quartet The Westerlies, whose new album of Bill Frisell compositions (Have You Heard: The Music of Bill Frisell, Vol. 1) was released last month to wide critical acclaim. A graduate of The Juilliard School, he has collaborated with artists from Fleet Foxes to Caroline Shaw, and composes for NBC, Showtime, NPR, and The New York Times. He is a faculty member at The New School.
Studio 9’s residency program provides artists with extended access to one of the most advanced immersive audio performance and recording spaces in the Northeast, built on Meyer Sound Constellation and Spacemap Go infrastructure.
