Wall 7: Dexter Vandersall
@dextervandersall _ 5.9.2025
Dexter Vandersall (b. 1999) lives and works in New York. Through painting, drawing, and sculpture, Dexter explores themes such as place, apocalyptic psychology, and the relationship between the body and nature. Influenced by his upbringing in the Appalachian South, he challenges traditional ideas through nonlinear and recursive narratives. In his new series, Dexter continues to explore themes of time, violence (both interpersonal and environmental), and natural cycles like birth, death, growth, and decay. Unlike previous works that depicted acts of violence in progress, this series omits the acts and actors, instead focusing on unknown environments and their aftermaths. The figures are suspended in unsettling scenes, their identities obscured, using the tension between figures and settings to explore unseen forces and unknown causes of events. Nonetheless, the paintings remain non-narrative, concentrating on phenomena, the psyche, and nonlinear time.
