@subodhguptastudio at the MET 🥭
what can contemporary art look like from south asia? gupta takes everyday materials and objects and puts them front & center — visible in spaces they historically haven’t been. over time, he’s created work that’s a living timeline of the economic and cultural transformation in india
i was able to see gupta’s “This Vessel Lies The Philosopher’s Stone” a few years ago in bombay at @naturemorte_india being confronted with an everyday object in a gallery space was perspective shifting for me.

Bollywood films were introduced to the Soviet Union in the 1950s, and its success was a reflection of the diplomacy of newly independent India and the USSR, in a time where Western movies were banned and people craved escape from love-for-the-state media. It was the most successful movie in the Soviet Union that year. Fast forward 30ish years later, Disco Dancer ends up being the second highest grossing film ever in the region.
It was released in China in 1983, and 50 years later, “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja” was arranged by a Chinese artist for the India China expo, in China in 2013. The song was repurposed in 2021 as a trend in China; Jie Mie in Mandarin roughly translates to “give me rice.” Douyin (Chinese TikTok) was flooded with satirical videos of food shortage. Crazy how one melody can live so many different lives across 60 years.
