Spanish Cider (or rather, Basque cider) might be one of Europeâs most underrated drinks.
Sagardoa as itâs called in Basque is traditionally enjoyed in a sagardotegi (cider house), where long communal tables, giant barrels, and generous pours are all part of the experience. And yes, thereâs technique involved.
A few things to know before your first pour:
- Itâs poured from high above the glass to aerate the cider and bring out its flavor.
- Itâs meant to be shared. Traditionally, everyone takes turns catching a splash straight from the barrel.
- The food matters just as much as the cider. Locals pair cider with things like chargrilled steak, cod omelets, gildas, anchovies, local cheese with quince paste, and plenty of pintxos along the way.
Comment âCIDERâ for the ultimate San SebastiĂĄn guide packed with favorite spots to eat, drink, and experience the city like a local. đ

If you google âwhat to do in Barcelonaâ youâll be overwhelmed with options. If youâve never been, hereâs a great place to start.
1. A food tour will help you get oriented to what locals actually eat in Catalunya and help you avoid tourist traps during your trip (and there are plenty, so this knowledge in your back pocket will be so useful).
2. A complete GaudĂ tour. Of course you have to see his works when youâre here because Barcelona = GaudĂ and GaudĂ = Barcelona. On this comprehensive tour you get to see most of the big ones and skip the lines.
[PS: For our all-in-one Barcelona guide (perfect for first timers), comment BARCELONA]
3. If you have more than a couple of days, a day trip to Montserrat is the perfect way to see more of the region and learn about one of its most important and iconic exports: cava. Enjoy a tour of Montserrat and the winery plus a farm to table lunch.

Italyâs drink menu goes way beyond wine and Aperol Spritz.
Craft beer is booming all over the country.
There are way more kinds of spritz than you think, and also so many cocktails and digestivos you just have to try.
So yes, drink the wine, but donât stop there.
And get as adventurous with what you eat as what you drink.
Work your way through our regional eating bucket list, city by city.
Comment EAT ITALY and weâll send it over.đ´đˇ
PS: Come eat and drink your way through Rome, Florence, Venice, and beyond with us. All tours are available on our website. DM us for recommendations or questions. đŤśđť
Tramezzini were born in 1920s Venice, inspired by British tea sandwiches, and then became a staple of the city.
Theyâre made with soft white bread, crusts off, stuffed generously with fillings like tuna and artichoke or rich, creamy crab. Some bars make around 50 varieties a day!
You order at the counter, pair yours with a Spritz, and eat standing up the way Venetians do.
DM us the word âVENICE FOODâ and weâll send you our list of the top 5 bars for the best sandwiches in the city, perfect for a little morning or afternoon pick-me-up as you explore.
If you want to go deeper, join us on a food tour, where we explain the ins and outs of eating in Venice: bacari, cicchetti, pasta, spritz, wine and everything in between.

In Lisbon, youâll often see people eating standing up at the counter, and it has nothing to do with being in a rush. Itâs often seen during breakfast in Lisbon, but at snack time too (hora do lanche).
For a quick coffee, a pastry, or a mid-afternoon snack, standing is just how itâs done, while sit-down is for lunch and dinner.
[Comment BREAKFAST for our list of the best places to eat breakfast in Lisbon, and what to order]
Itâs a common thing youâll see in Portugal, and youâll find the same across Spain and Italy too.
Coming to Lisbon? Join us on a food tour and learn how and where the locals eat the best food in the city.

How to eat & drink in Florence đŽđšđ Most tourists walk straight past these spots⌠ad
đ Save this for your trip to Florence.
This is where locals actually eat and drink in Florence⌠tiny bars, historic trattorias, and neighbourhood enotecas, sharing simple Tuscan food and glasses of Chianti.
If youâre visiting Florence, this is one of the best ways to experience the food culture properlyâŚ
đ How the evening flows:
⢠Antipasti (cured meats, cheeses, focaccia) + Chianti đˇ
⢠Wine from one of the cityâs wine windows
⢠A classic aperitif at a local gem
⢠Fresh pasta
⢠Florentine steak (bistecca alla Fiorentina) đĽŠ
⢠Gelato to finish đŚ
We spent the evening on the other side of the river (Oltrarno), which feels like a completely different side of Florence⌠less polished, more local and full of traditional spots.
đˇ One of the highlights⌠Florenceâs historic wine windows (buchette del vino)
â wine was served straight from peopleâs homes through these tiny windows onto the street⌠and during the plague they became a contactless way to serve wine đ
We did a food and wine tour here, led by a local expert, which made it so much easier to discover local spots and know what to actually order.

Ciao! Weâre Kelly & Boris. đĽâ¨ After years in the Washington, D.C. corporate world, we decided to trade the 30-year mortgage for a new kind of âAmerican Dreamâ: an apartment we bought on Lago dâIseo in Northern Italy Lake for less than a U.S. down payment. Now, weâre documenting every high and low of our renovation journey, sharing the honest costs of Italian homeownership, and learning what it truly means to live la dolce vita. Whether youâre here for the dusty restoration updates or looking for tips on how to buy your own slice of Italy ethically, weâre so glad youâre following along on this adventure with us! đŽđšđ
DONâT MISS THIS IN ROME đŽđšđ
The cityâs BEST food neighbourhood đˇ ad
Save this for your trip to Rome đ
If youâre visiting Rome, this is one of the best ways to experience the food culture properly⌠not just one restaurant, but moving through different spots and eating like a local.
đ How the evening flows:
⢠Start with an aperitivo đĽ
⢠Classic street food (supplÏ)
⢠A stop at Trastevereâs most iconic bar đ
⢠Wine & bruschetta in a local enoteca
⢠Roman pasta & wine in a family-run trattoria đ
⢠Gelato to finish đŚ
đĄ One of our favourite things we learnt⌠how to spot an authentic gelateria đ
đ¨ Avoid bright neon colours (pistachio shouldnât be bright green), piled-high displays and too many flavours⌠thatâs usually for tourists
What makes Trastevere special is the atmosphere⌠the streets are buzzing, people are out late, sharing food, no rush, just enjoying the evening.
This sunset food and wine tour was a great way to discover local spots and understand the stories behind them without overplanning⌠plus thereâs plenty of wine throughout the evening, so itâs a bit of a boozy one đ
