presents a special one-night screening of Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 German silhouette animation silent film “THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED,” the oldest surviving feature length animated film on its 100th anniversary year, with a live score by NYC’s MORRICONE YOUTH!
The event includes a pre-show screening of director John Isaacs’ short 1970 documentary “The Art of Lotte Reiniger” which takes a 17 minute look at the work of Lotte Reiniger and how she created her shadow animatation films.
Lotte Reiniger’s astonishing 1926 adaptation of tales from “One Thousand and One Nights”, THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED is the first feature length animated film, using striking silhouette cutouts and gorgeous color tinting to bring to life the story of an Arabian prince who is whisked away on a flying horse to an enchanted land where he tangles with an evil sorcerer, rescues a princess, and joins forces with none other than Aladdin.

Happy 100th Birthday (today!) to Lotte Reiniger's silhouette animated silent "THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED," the oldest surviving animation feature film !!
On MAY 2, 1926, the film premiered at the Volksbühne in Berlin as a matinee self-organized to invited guests, as no cinema was willing to screen it. Only after another equally successful screening at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 1 did the film receive its official German release at the Gloria Palast in Berlin on Sept 23, 1926. The reviews unanimously praised the "bold attempt," with some critics describing it as "enthusiastic, delighted, and rapturous." However, there were also doubts as to whether a silhouette film was "sustainable" enough to fill an entire evening. Overall, the film was an artistic success.
