COLOUR HUNTING - VIENNA EDITION I keep seeing people doing the colour hunting challenge and I was sad to miss out on my local lab doing one. So I decided to give it a try for myself last week when I was at @wayupnorth One roll of film The city of Vienna The colour yellow This was super fun, if you get a chance, I’d highly recommend it. It really honed my eye and helped me practice my observation skills. Plus it helps that Vienna is really rather beautiful. LONDON ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The lovely Rubi and Jay travelled from Northern Ireland to London for their engagement photos, as that is where their love began. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After meeting me in their favourite pub in Covent Garden, which is also where they first met, we took a little stroll around the area. Pretty sure people thought they were celebrities, which is not surprising, as they did look so fine. LONDON PUB ENGAGEMENT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When Rubi and Jay starting talking about their engagement shoot with me, it was going to be where they live in Northern Ireland. I confess, I was looking forward to doing one of these in my homeland and had got as far as scouting out locations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then they changed their minds and requested that we do it in a pub in London, where they first met. Having done many engagement shoots in London, I was like ‘sure’ but maybe felt a tiny bit disappointed. I can after all, go to London any day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ BUT what soon transpired was that this was no ordinary pub, The Marquis in Covent Garden is a legendary London boozer that manages to feel like a friendly local, even though it is in the heart of the capital. It has also has some serious music industry credentials that can be seen all over the walls. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is where these two first began their love story and they were right, it was the perfect location to record that in photographs. The staff even kindly let us in before opening time, so we could have free rein of the place, including playing some of the pub’s vinyls as the soundtrack to the shoot. For the lovely Mansplainer who this week told me to “put down the Hasselblad and try shooting with a Rebel T7 or something.” Sure, how about a £99 Minolta with a £3 roll of film? I did photograph the rest of this wedding on @hasselblad X2D II but just for fun I ran this crappy roll of film through my trusty little SLR to see what I could come up with. To be fair, Alex at @chemistryfilmlab was dubious about this @orwofilm Wolfen 400 but I actually love the scans. BRIDAL EDITORIAL – EDINBURGH ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There’s a brilliant weekly newsletter for photographers from @lenselworld that looks at industry trends and shifts. I avidly read it every week, and it often plants little seeds that later turn into ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Seems I’m not the only one. Out on this group shoot at our recent Thrive conference, led by the brilliant Camila Urrea, she referenced a recent Lensel piece about placing people on their wedding day alongside everyday objects or situations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So she placed Fern - in this incredible @julita_ldn_bride gown - right next to a parking meter. And it works. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There’s something about putting something extraordinary, like a wedding outfit, into a completely ordinary setting that makes it stand out even more. It adds a sense of play and tension. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The night before, I shared at our @pic_time storytelling session - a groom popping into a London corner shop to grab champagne and supplies, then asking for a photo with the guy behind the counter. Both of them grinning.
