My submission for the skatepark benefit art show at @make.shiftartspace Cmon out tomorrow evening and check out all the art and support your local skate scene which to me also means supporting mental health, physical health, creativity, youth, old-heads, and overall something fun and positive that grinds against the doldrums and sadness of our world. I’ve been messing around on skateboards since I was about 11 years old and you’ll still catch me rolling on the occasion. It’s been one of the best things in my life and if I’m lucky I’ll still be out there for a while longer.

Today's band highlight: The Sons of Rainier They are performing Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At the dawn of 2017, Devin Champlin brought a couple of his original songs to Dean Johnson with the invitation to sing in harmony together. That proved to be joyful, and they tapped Sam Gelband to join in with his sturdy baritone to be the middleman. Quickly this bore fruit, so they invited Charlie Meyer along for the ride with his lovely bass playing skills. At that, The Sons of Rainier were born. Devin Champlin has been writing songs since he first picked up a hand-me-down guitar at the age of twelve. Through his teen years and early twenties he found his cultural home in DIY punk music and skateboarding. At some point in there he picked up his dad’s banjo more often than not and spent over a decade learning, playing and performing different styles of traditional American folk music, mostly acoustic blues and Southern fiddle tunes. He toured the country numerous times with acts like The Gallus Brothers, and The Crow Quill Night Owls, collaborating occasionally with elders of the scene and even being inducted into the Jug Band Hall Of Fame (yes that exists). His personal songwriting was always percolating inn the background, making sporadic appearances at house shows and the like. With The Sons of Rainier, Champlin found a loving home for many of these songs where they could be nurtured by the hands and voices of his compadres. The arrangements rest on the foundation of Devin’s songwriting, and is brought forth with warm tube amps, Dean’s unpredictable, weeping guitar lines, a loosely tuned snare, upright bass, and close three-part harmonies. It is 45 rpm folk music that is sweet and haunting. It’s a polaroid of a stolen slow dance. Here’s a trailer for my new short film One Way Days. It stars Andy Rick and is about an accidental journey on an otherwise regular day in the life. I’ll be showing it tonight 12/27 at @honeymoonmeads and will be playing a live score of original instrumental music, mostly on piano. Along with that will be two other short films and music by @john_swanke and @seancurtispatrick as well as some other audio visual oddities throughout the evening. It all starts at 7. It is going to be a special one! More About Devin: Devin Champlin is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, luthier and artist from Northwestern Washington. As the frontman/songwriter for Sons Of Rainier (along with bandmates Dean Johnson, Sam Gelband, and Charlie Meyer) he has carved out a unique voice in the contemporary indy-folk americana world. Intimate lyrics filled with optimistic existentialism are unhurriedly sung with a woodgrain baritone over fingerpicked guitar, the occasional elbow fiddle or keyboard. He prefers not to lean too hard into any specific genre, although he’s satisfied with the umbrella term “folk” as the idea of non-commercial music made by people for the people. He’s spent the better part of two decades studying traditional American musical styles, specifically country blues guitar and old time fiddle tunes, learning from old source recordings, elders in the scene, and the festival/camp community. Along with that cultural musical nerdery he has a prolific output of original music. As an artist with a DIY aesthetic, he uses songcraft as a medium to create imagery- along those lines he also produces animations, videos, paintings, drawings, and prints in tandem with his musical output. Keeping the audience (and himself) on their toes, he rarely plays the same thing twice- sometimes it may seem as if the wheels are about to fall off, but the train stays on the tracks and it’s a satisfying roll. His recordings, solo and with Sons Of Rainier have found their way into the permanent library of hobos, widows, fry cooks, and fancy pants alike.
