Partly because of the visuals, I’d been counting the minutes until the night’s main event: the Danish/Faroese Iotunn. And, of course, because their progressive metal and the way they deliver it absolutely floored me last October, when they opened for Dark Tranquillity at Barba Negra.
Back then they were already “apologising” for only squeezing in three or four songs into their allowed slot, and honestly, things weren’t much different at their first-ever headlining tour stop at Analog Music Hall either — eight tracks total, stretched across almost ninety minutes. Their shortest piece still runs over five minutes, but luckily their songwriting chops make it impossible for the set to slip into repetition or, god forbid, boredom.
Jón Aldará easily matched the charisma of the evening’s earlier frontmen — his presence, movement, and whole visual aura locked perfectly onto the musicians’ razor‑precise delivery of that melancholic northern metal. They built a fantastic atmosphere with excellent sound (okay, the guitars were nearly inaudible for the first couple minutes, but that got fixed fast), and from the very first moments they had the entire room in their grip. I have to highlight the lyrical, epic I Feel the Night, which arrived fourth and hit like a heart‑piercing journey — the kind that knocks the breath out of your lungs.
The Gras brothers’ guitar work was pure joy to listen to, Eskil Rask laid down the foundations with a wide grin on his face, while Bjørn Wind Andersen’s drumming we could only hear — seeing him was impossible, buried behind gear and perched on a raised platform.
Time flew by in a blink with six tracks from Kinship and two from Access All Worlds. I drove home in silence, letting that lingering, melancholic aftertaste settle in.

"Quail was able to embrace the heavy, the hard, the vulnerable and the feather-light all at the same time while for over an hour she locked the audience into a world where it's okay for things to take time. Where it's good for things to take time. She gave us a break that everyone should treat themselves to, and where colors and moods and sounds were allowed to flow freely"
