This was such a creative project to direct, inspired by fashion films and shot in one beautiful Santa Cruz day. Exploring the idea of how the word “note” is used to describe many things made the scripting process feel fresh. I love to jot down an idea or cross items off a handwritten to do list so this product spoke to me. Thanks to a lovely team that made it a truly collaborative piece! When @derekgarten and I wrote this, it sort of grew legs and started to walk on its own. There was something magical about how it all came together; the video felt that way too. . Our director @devabfilms asked me about the song, we talked about it briefly & she came up with this entire vision and her & the entire team at @impactcreative absolutely knocked it out of the park. . Workin and reppin on set for #lahaina If you know me you know I’m proud to be Hawai’ian and passionate about #nativehawaiian issues, past, present and future. Particularly when it comes to representation in the media. The loss and trauma from this fire is heartbreaking and unfathomable. Maui and Lahaina are special to a lot of people, but especially Kanaka Maoli and local residents whose families have been there for generations. The fires have put a spotlight on the complex history and challenges Native Hawaiians have been struggling against for hundreds of years. It risks being lost in the news cycle but these struggles have been and continue to be important so help keep it present by posting, reposting and more importantly learning. I’m committed to learning everyday. There’s a reason many Hawaiians don’t call themselves American and have been talking about the detrimental effects of colonialism and tourism long before this horrific fire. Pages like @ainamomona @protectmaunakea @kanaeokana @adamkeawe share information about cultural history and current challenges. We shot the music video for “Fine” spontaneously, just a few days before we all locked down in March 2020 having no idea it would be our last shoot for a while. We’d brainstormed concept for a while and I called @miragotomusic and @philiplima.dp on Friday to see if we could pull something off, since we had some anamorphic lenses from a cancelled shoot. We shot the video the next day at a friends property in the woods. Ahhh, creativity and collaboration with talented friends are one of my favorite things in life.
