With millions of teens using Instagram and being automatically placed into Instagram Teen Accounts, we wanted to see if these accounts actually create a safer online experience.
@accountabletech selected five voluntary research participants aged 18 or older from the @designitforus coalition, and they documented their experiences along the way.
Our participants can confirm that Meta’s Teen Accounts don’t always live up to what they promise. Lawmakers must continue to advance policies that implement safety and privacy by design on social media platforms to better protect young people online. #instagram #teen #socialmedia #genz

“It’s not you… it’s them.” 🙅🏾♂️
That was one of the biggest takeaways from the Hard Reset event hosted by @hercampusmedia & @designitforus . The conversation focused on something alot of us already feel deep down:
Social media platforms are not just “accidentally” addictive. They are intentionally designed to keep us scrolling, reacting, comparing, consuming, and coming back for more.
And in cities like Detroit the impact hits even harder. Many young people already face barriers to mental health support, digital literacy resources, and safe community spaces.
This isn’t just about “too much screen time.”
It’s about:
⛑️ mental health
🪞 self-worth
🪤 exploitation
🗒️ misinformation
🫂 and who gets harmed most when profit becomes the priority.
That’s why Michigan’s new “Kids Over Clicks” legislation matters. Because for once, lawmakers are saying maybe billion-dollar tech companies shouldn’t be allowed to engineer addiction into childhood.
But policy alone won’t save us.
We need:
🧠 digital literacy
📚 real education around media consumption
🗣 honest conversations with young people
⚖️ accountability for Big Tech
Because if we don’t push back, these platforms will continue optimizing for engagement over humanity.
The “Hard Reset” isn’t just about apps.
It’s about us reclaiming our attention, our minds, and our communities.

They’ve been named to our third cohort of grantees. With support from our dynamic partners and supporters, we raised $1.9 million in grants, which were pooled and allocated to 24 youth- and intergenerationally-led organizations focused on advancing tech accountability, youth mental health, responsible AI, and tech-based climate solutions.
Design It For Us is a youth-led coalition leveraging grassroots power to disrupt Big Tech’s harmful business models.
When we asked Zamaan Qureshi, Design It For Us Co-Founder and Director of Campaigns and Policy, what RTYPF’s support has meant for him and the organization over the past couple of years, he said, “RTYPF has been a critical convening space for me and Design It For Us, bringing together some of the foremost youth leaders and organizations working in the responsible technology movement. Our ability to strategize, build partnerships, and execute on work together would not be possible without the fund.”
