Drifting between bodies, landscapes, objects, and empty spaces, the book forms a quiet psychological terrain rather than a fixed documentary narrative. Inserted within the publication are three loose ā€œgatesā€ containing additional photographic sequences, functioning as temporary passages into the author’s inner world. Each copy also includes a small red Risograph-printed booklet featuring archival family photographs from the 1950s to 1990s, referencing both personal family history and Mao’s ā€œLittle Red Bookā€. Bound using an exposed Swiss-style binding and hand-wrapped in a threaded cardboard package inspired by old Tianjin snack packaging, the publication exists not only as a photobook, but also as a tactile object carrying traces of memory and familiarity. Releasing at the Melbourne Art Book Fair 2026. — Credits:

Last but not least, please welcome the Buffet Magazine Issue: Milk Crate. For our third issue, we sit down with Zhou Yi @23h0ursago to talk about photography, childhood, migration, language, and the quiet complexity of growing up between cultures. Issue 03: Milk Crate
A Third Culture Child: Finding Identities via Photography This issue follows a conversation with Zhou Yi, a photographer whose work moves through memory, family archives, places, objects and fragments of everyday life. A ā€œthird culture childā€ is someone who grows up outside their parents’ native culture, often moving between countries during their formative years. Through Zhou Yi’s photographs and stories, this issue looks at identity not as something fixed, but as something carried, collected, questioned and rebuilt over time. Through this issue, we explore photography as a way of holding feelings that are often difficult to explain: belonging, distance, nostalgia, language, home, and the in-between spaces that shape who we become. Releasing on the Melbourne Art Book Fair at NGV International @ngvmelbourne , 15-17 May. —— Credits

The Gradient of Growth — RMIT Communication Design Field Guide 2025 What makes this guide special? ā€˜The Palette’ feature is a rotating colour wheel that spins to reveal a full spectrum, symbolising the diversity and creative range of the comm design community. The guide was designed to be intervened with. Students can rearrange pages, pull sections out for display, add their own work, write all over it. Exposed Chicago screws make it editable, uncoated paper invites annotation, and the visual system holds essays, images, and prompts without clashing. Itā€˜s become more than a first-year resource — the design is now influencing other RMIT programs as a model for fostering belonging through thoughtful, inclusive design. The Beginner’s Guide to Risograph by Sandwich Press — now out in the world. This guide exists because we kept answering the same questions: How does Risograph actually work? What can it do? Where do I even start? So we made something honest, accessible, and practical for anyone curious about this beautiful, temperamental machine. Printed in our signature Riso red and black on recycled paper, the guide covers everything from how the duplicator was invented to ink chemistry, troubleshooting, and what makes Risograph different from every other printing method. It includes archival photos of early Riso machines and doesn’t shy away from explaining both the magic and the limitations. We made it for ourselves first, then realised it might be useful for others too. Now it lives in studios, on press tables, and hopefully in the hands of people just starting to fall in love with Riso. Available now. The Gradient of Growth — RMIT Communication Design Field Guide 2025 More than a handbook — this guide was designed to grow with its owner. Bound with exposed Chicago screws, the modular structure means students can reorder pages, add their own materials (Instax photos, project work, notes), or move frequently-used sections to the front. It’s meant to be marked up, collaged into, lived with. A working document that reflects each student’s unique path through their studies. We selected uncoated paper that invites annotation, layered typography for easy navigation, and embedded bilingual content and First Nations perspectives throughout — making inclusivity part of the book’s DNA, not an afterthought. Weā€˜re proud to share The Gradient of Growth — RMIT Communication Design Field Guide 2025, a project close to our hearts and recognised as an @agdagram AGDA Awards 2025 finalist. This guide was created for first-year design students navigating the beautiful chaos of finding their place in the discipline. First year is when you're forming your creative identity, meeting your people, figuring out if this path is really yours. It's vulnerable, exciting, overwhelming — and it deserved more than just another orientation booklet. So we made something that grows with you. Part survival guide, part creative companion, part love letter to the messy, non-linear journey of becoming a designer. Student voices at the center. Bilingual sections. First Nations knowledge. Space for your own notes, sketches, and beautiful chaos. A huge thank you to RMIT School of Design for trusting us with this work, and to every student and educator who contributed their voice and perspective. This guide exists because of you. Last Thursday night, our project, the RMIT Communication Design Field Guide, was honoured with a Distinction at the 2024 @agdagram Awards ceremony at NGV—what an incredible achievement for Sandwich Press! This guide represents a groundbreaking initiative for RMIT University, designed to foster a sense of belonging and community among first-year Communication Design students. As alumni from the same program, we understand what’s often missing from the first-year experience and how important and useful a resource like this is in shaping students’ university lives. A heartfelt thank you to Nicola, Russell, Brad, Ruirui, and everyone for initiating, helping, and supporting this project. Your support, guidance, and encouragement were instrumental in bringing this vision to life. 🩶 Design & Production: @designedbyshuai @jiayu.design @ruiruidotcom Photography: @shaoshuai_on_film Content & Leadership: @nicolastjohn @bradhaylock @outbackhipsters @rmitcommdesign #agda #agdaawards #publicationdesign #indiepublishing #smallpublishing #risograph
