Whether youâre dealing with too much water or not enough, the answer is the same: work with your landscape, not against it. Native plants manage water the way your region needs it managed â deep roots that drink rainfall where it falls, drought-adapted species that donât need a sprinkler running all summer. Your yard is already part of the water cycle. The question is whether itâs helping or making things harder. Start by watching what happens next time it rains. đ§đż

The instinct to improve soil before planting is almost universal, and almost always wrong for native plants. Lean, disturbed ground is where they evolved, where they thrive, and where they quietly shut invasives out. Your âproblemâ yard might already be halfway there. What native plants have surprised you by thriving in tough conditions? đąâ¨â¨For more on this topic, check out @design_your_wild âs article âWhy the World Needs âBadâ Soilâ at designyourwild.com. Link in Bio.

A workshop aimed at helping you plan your own piece of wild paradise, led by the fabulous mother/daughter team Heather (@design_your_wild ) and Zoe (@planitwild ).
Heather and Zoe are known for their fun, interactive classes and in this one weâll wade out into the not-so-deep waters of what I like to think of as âdesign doodlingâ. A simple and intuitive way to visualize ideas and test out options in your landscape, doodling is often my entry point into a full design (swipe through to see some examples!)
The workshop is open to paid members on Heatherâs Design your Wild Substack page. (Donât miss out- itâs the number one gardening Substack and the subscription is chock full of value for a full year.)
You donât need any special artistic skills- but you will need an IPad and Ipencil. (If you donât have an iPad, a few large printed photos and a stack of tracing paper can also work!)
Hope to see you there!
