Here's a little bit of animation process from our Nike spot for the FIFA Women's World Cup. ⚽️⚽️⚽️
I think I started salivating when @neongsan asked me to help out on this shot. 🤤🤤🤤
It was super fun figuring out a way to animate the background in a dynamic way that would be true to the original styleframes.
As per usual I started with a fractal noise and built it out with colorama and some noise alpha.
Sorry it's kind of chopped up and complicated but I hate using reels so let me know if you have any questions!

Throwback to a couple of years ago when I helped animate these stickers for WhatsApp. 🟢🟢🟢
It was super fun getting stuck into a fresh pack and figuring out the visual language across a set.
Each one posed it's own challenges in terms of time and space (literal file size space) so it was interesting having to compromise/optimize. 📊📊📊
I think my faves are the flower on fire and the snoozy WFH guy. Maybe even stinky banana 🍌🍌🍌
Shoutout to our fearless leader @__lizsmith for Art Directing a bajillion stickers for over a year 🫡🫡🫡
What you see here is a fraction of what we worked on so check out the rest on the buck site OR download the packs directly on WhatsApp!!!
Watching the Asian Cup at the moment reminded me of this spot we did a few years ago for Nike during the FIFA Women's World Cup. ✔️✔️✔️
This spot was for the up and coming stars of Japan's team, featuring striker Mina Tanaka. 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 @minatanaka_official
Super fun to do some look dev and work on the background anim to help out superstars @neongsan and @__samvan__ 🏆🏆🏆
I don't usually share my editing work but this was one of the rare times I had the creative freedom to build out a sequence with footage. It's usually a challenge to get an edit approved when it involves talent like this but I was surprised to see how happy everyone was.
Fun fact, the tumbling shot at the end was the director just flipping his iphone around.
🐎🐎🐎Happy Lunar New Year!!!🧧🧧🧧
This was one I made for @buck_design in some spare time between gigs so thanks for the shoutout comms team!
I wanted to try playing with something more low-contrast in values but high contrast in blurry vs sharp. I looked at some shiny Akhal-teke horses for inspo which I recommend googling ✨️✨️✨️
I started out with some value studies of them before choosing ones I liked and redrawing them with pencil on paper. Sometimes I prefer sketching animals by hand because there's something about their musculature and form that's hard to replicate digitally.
Keeping that in mind, I traced the lineart digitally again before kinda going crazy in Illustrator with the vectors. I'm not particularly confident with a clean finished line in PS so I use vectors as a template/safety net before finishing with blurs and texturing in PS.
I hope these horses bring you as much joy and luck as they have for me! 🧨🧨🧨
This is me right now, if you even care. 💀💀💀
Decided to do another illustration inspired by Mishima again, this time Confessions Of A Mask.
The novel heavily references an artwork based on the matyrdom of Saint Sebastian. It's a moment of sexual awakening for the protagonist and the usual depictions have the Saint's hands bound above him in ecstasy. 🥵🥵🥵
I liked the idea of rendering a version of the painting in an editorial style, silhouetted against a backdrop. I really enjoyed going through all the various depictions by Renaissance artists before settling on this one by Gerard von Honthorst. For me it captures a feeling of despair and defeat, resigning yourself to the cruelties of the world.
🎯🎯🎯
Had a lot of fun designing this as a book cover. Then again...could also be a riso print...

@buck.u.back
Trying some illustration again, this time with a piece inspired by the novel Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima. 🙏🙏🙏
I liked the idea of a Buddhist statue acting as a silent witness as the temple burns down around it, so I tried to paint the lighting from below in an ominous way. 👹👹👹
It was super fun getting deep into the history of the Golden Pavilion, trying to find references of statues from the Muromachi period - there's a real flatness and rigidity to the facial features that's unique to Japanese depictions of Buddha.
Also tried a variation with type for a book cover. Or maybe a poster to print one day...🤔🤔🤔
Would you buy one with type or no? Let me know in the comments!!

A number of people have asked me about my process on Wanderer lately so I thought I'd share a quick process video.
I basically rotoscope by keyframing shape layers over footage, then duplicate them with feathered masks (also keyframed) to get highlights and shadows. I then crunch the masked layers with various levels of noise and roughen edges to get that final look.
It sounds kind of straightforward because it is, just very time consuming! My approach is generally to start with very solid shapes and colours and only use texture and noise when needed to break up the values.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below./
Posting some stills in anticipation of @pictoplasma !! These were some of my favourites to design and animate, in particular the first slide. It was the first one I painted before I knew what the film would become. There was something primal about the water in motion that sparked something. Bonus points if you can guess what film it's from!
I am extremely delighted to announce that my short Wanderer has been selected as part of the Animation Expanded section of @pictoplasma this year!!
A huge thank you to the organisers of the festival this year, it's a huge honour. In fact, I'm hoping to make it all the way to Berlin for the festival in the start of May, so if you're in town from the 1st - 4th, lets hang out!
Last one in this series of illustrations. It's been fun playing in this style and I think this one has a good balance of elements from the previous two.
Had to shuffle some of the utility poles around because they made the perspective awkward but wondering if these powerlines are too strong now.
I always have a hard time figuring out what elements to alter from a photo...I'm afraid I'll lose the magic of why I took it in the first place.
This is based off another photo from Japan last year. I think it's another one of @marnatea
making her way up Mount Hiei.

Having fun with this new style, so I decided to try my hand at different environments.
Turns out not having a building or a figure makes it really hard to create a point of interest so I added this little frog, in honour of my recent bathroom visitor.
I hope this guy figures out what he's looking for after all his pondering and such.
This one was based off another photo from Japan last year. I think it's a pond inside Meiji-jingu garden.

Trying something different with this illustration, inspired by the work of @manshenlo
It's based on a photo of @marnatea that I took on our travels last year in Japan. I think this temple was Enryaku-ji on Mt Hiei, which has a spectacular view overlooking Lake Biwa.
It was an interesting challenge trying to balance the detail in the linework with creating a visual hierarchy. I had a lot of making this though, especially with the architecture...huge surprise there.
Also thank you to the queen @__lizsmith
for some helpful advice and tricks
