Walk_ is a project pairing photographs with audio recordings of the people and atmosphere in which they were captured by Brooklyn-based filmmaker and artist Derek Beck. Each instalment of the project involves shooting a single roll of 35mm film while walking a random route through a city or interviewing a subject, the first of which was started over 10 years ago:
āI was playing tourist after living in New York City for five years, and went to Central Park on a freezer cold Saturday afternoon. After walking through the Ramble in Central Park, and overhearing snippets of passing conversations, I arrived at these benches and sat down for a breather. I had my Canon AE-1 35mm camera with me and was struck with an idea. I took out my iPhone, started recording audio, put it in my jacket pocket, and took a photo of the benchesā
Since then, Beck has shot 50 rolls of film, traversed 40 different cities, met hundreds of strangers and walked countless miles. And he doesnāt seem to be stopping anytime soon.
Thereās an unmistakable sincerity to Beckās work, and at a time when social platforms continue to drift away from still imagery in favour of video, it offers a refreshing and thoughtful way of experiencing photography.
Big thanks to @booooooom for once again featuring the @walk_ photo series ten years after it first began.

Since then, Beck has shot 50 rolls of film, traversed 40 different cities, met hundreds of strangers and walked countless miles. And he doesnāt seem to be stopping anytime soon. Returning to the city he first started shooting back in 2016, Beck plans to revamp the project shooting new rolls throughout the five boroughs (with three released so far), revisiting certain locations from before and capturing new moments too.

Thanks @jeffhamada and @kimihamada for your continued support of this series over the years!

Shakey Graves - If Not For You (Where Is My Mind?) (Live in a Sunbeam)
This live performance was shot in one take with zero prep and should probably be considered a happy accident that it made its way online. Alejandro invited us to shoot broad coverage of the band as they rehearsed for tour and tested out their new, big-timing-it lighting set-up. At the end of the second day, as the sun was setting, he noticed the āBlade Runner doorā - sunlight was shining through a crack of the warehouse back door, highly visible from all the haze floating around. The next day the effect was back and I asked if he wanted to take a quick photo in the light. As I took a couple 35mm photos, a mic stand magically arrived and they started playing the song as we scrambled to set the cameras.
Here some behind-the-scenes clips from the shoot:
1. Snippet from the final video
2. Ali noticing the āBlade Runner doorā for the second time
3. Taking a couple 35mm photos in the doorway and a microphone arrives thanks to @rawhide_
4. Song starts as we scramble to get cameras set-up
5. iPhone footage I took during the performance
6. Snippet from end of performance
7. @pappyogil in doorway later

Back in January, I received the 2025 Support for Artists and Creative Individuals grant by the city of Houston through @houstonartsalliance to build a digital art museum.
Itās suddenly October and Iām finished putting together this āprototypeā or āpilot episodeā of Gloze that features 50+ artists. Its online premiere is happening at 7 PM CST / 8 PM EST. You can watch along at glozemuseum.com/2025-showcase .
Hereās a photo/video log or journal of some steps along the way.
1. A snippet from the final Gloze walkthrough.
2. During the pandemic days, I made this original 5 minute mock-up called āVideo Dot Archiveā using some video art I had made for an instrumental record by Walker Lukens.
3. A few years later, I started building a more advanced mock-up called āRoundaboutā that I used to pitch the project to HAA.
4. Some early inspiration from āThe Concrete Masterpieceā
5. A pretty nice email to open
6. Designing a pamphlet for a video.
7. Mock-up of an early Gloze map idea.
8. I got this frame for free at Jerryās Artarama because someone forgot to pick it up. Itās seen throughout the final video a ton.
9. Filming some early ideas with @tupint who plays the sole museum staff member, Felix.
10. Some postcards I distributed around Houston and Austin for the artist open call.
11. Some unused Felix behind-the-scenes
12. Trevor really hungover on a walking pad as I give him progressively larger items.
13. An early tunnel test that never got used.
14. Shooting Chris Rehmās song performance
15. The Gloze emblem made from a painting my grandpa made of a compass years ago.
16. The set-up at Ronin Harrisburg for the first screening.
17. The Felix outro
18. Early on I asked ChatGPT to write an origin story of Gloze and I made this mock-up pulling clips from the internet and using an AI generated voice that sounds suspiciously like Alan Rickman. Itās a pretty funny watch.
There will be some announcements on more screenings soon if you want to see it on a big screen!
Special thanks to my family, Trevor Smith, Edwin Terrell, Chris Rehm and Houston Arts Alliance
