Incredibly fucked up, filled with attitude and the project that made me break every rule in the engineering booth. Some of these tracks made me tear my hair out figuring out how to proceed. Some of them felt like the transexual ancestors compelled me to move my hands over dials. I’m so grateful to hear such a whirlwind of positive reception about a record that I’ve never been more sure of. ATTENTION MANDATORY.
And also Hymns From The Hole by Mechanical Turk! One of the first records I ever worked on after making studio engineering my full time gig four years ago? Mixed and mastered by me. Only on YouTube at the moment. I’m so grateful to finally hear these pieces out. Here’s a selection from Al-Jidar which stumbles like an ominous premonition from the radio waves out of James Ferraro’s most depraved nightmares.

Ahem. I will be in NYC for a few weeks working on the release show for Mr. Cobra by the wonderful Lucy Liyou. The album that will put me down as the greatest mastering engineer of all time and also has made me celibate. These two are related. Please come (but don’t come)
HUGE DAY! June Youngblood’s stunning debut record. Mastered by me. Engineered and performed by a bunch of sweeties. Goes incredibly hard all the time (I mean listen to the layers in that outro!!) and is one of two records to make me tear up when engineering. There will be a show tonight and attendance is completely mandatory.
Magic Candy’s Desire Lines Diary<3 out today. Hell of a record. Deeply complex, masterful explorations of space. Had an aura from the moment we sat down to work on it. Three blackouts, a half dozen sessions and my ceiling caving in it is done. Mastering, some assistant mixing and overdub recording done by me. To know Vinny is to love her. Special thanks to Jesse, with the kindest managerial letters I’ve ever received.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, it’s Felt Feutre’s (@her.treasure ) In Purple Collide. A weblike vortex of pulsing, rhythms, sounds and just good vibes! Super fun day too (documented by a very mutually disappointed soda review). I vowed that Yali would leave my space knowing what mastering was, and I failed.
I will be playing a show with darling Sylvie’s new band @coyotekillyoublesssing - besties Selch and Nate Ramer from @jpinkband doing a special duo set and motherfucking prairie princess, a band I’ve loved from across the coast for a minute now from @marble_blast_gold

Wow! It’s been difficult to find the time to post lately I’ve been so overwhelmed. Also difficult to want to post on the hellscape app, alas I rely on it so much to be hired.
First up. Nourish Bludgeon by Its Tongue Is A Rope. A truly excellent piece of sound design. I don’t often throw on music that I’ve worked on after it comes out but I’ve found myself coming back repeatedly to this one in my insular and reflective journaling mornings. The sample work on Drench and the propulsion of Overwhelmed particularly compel me. A truly beautiful record.
In addition Daniel and Maddie have once again brought me a sensual banger in the bead eels latest hit, Lower Allston Brine. This is maybe my favorite bead eels track released so far (although the ep I cut with them a few days ago has some songs I can’t wait to show yall).
Two reccys out! World of Shadow by Ko T.C. !! A constantly moving and psycho spiritual sci-fi post pc music record (and I’m absolutely ripping off my friend Maddie’s description here). It’s so earnestly in love with pop and life and uncompromisingly maximalist. One of the most enjoyable collaborative mastering sessions I’ve ever had. I’m sooooo deeply thankful to have been part of this.
and then there’s Live from Los Angeles by Hard Times Circus! Had an absolute blast putting the ol’ Chris Knox techniques to use for this one. An alive and mountainous road trip album that jangles by like chains on a snow tire. Jeffrey’s voice is hypnotic. Also deeply grateful to be here!
Finally, I can’t stop thinking about all of Elijah Wood’s they/them coded outfits from Ice Storm. That’s all
To everyone who said I was cursing myself with white lighters, I have officially made it out of the 27 club today. In the few weeks left of 27 I started recording Dependable Son’s next ~something~ and finished a few tracks. I also joined a band (more on that soon). Here’s what was released that I had the privilege of working on during my soft social media break.
Ko’s amazingly psycho and spellbinding album, World of Shadow, is out in a week on Jan. 23rd. The first two singles have been out for a second and I’m enamored by the constant play of harmony, bpm, timbre and all things form that make Ko a genius.
Purgatory Creek’s album, Mending, came out on Jan 2nd, and mannnnn the swelllllls (and some of the coolest clarinet flourishes I’ve heard in a second). Connor’s didactic approach to the soundscapes made working a breeze, and look at that album cover.
Finally, I cut a vinyl. I’d say you could hear it but it sold out all 500 copies in a day lol. Big thanks Shearling.
