𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗢𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀: 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗠𝗔𝘃.𝟳 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝗲 In a video uploaded to YouTube nine years ago detailing the history and ethos behind techno, James Wiltshire »Freemasons, F9 Audio« said: »If house is a feeling, then techno is a landscape.«¹ One of my greatest fascinations with the genre lies in its ability to, at least in my experience, alter the perceived physical limits of the space you’re in. Through sound, one doesn’t simply tell a story; one builds entire worlds. One track, you’re piloting an alien spacecraft; the next, you’re gliding through an underwater utopia. One moment you’re caught in a tribal war ritual, the next you’re suspended in a spiritual dimension beyond our own. It takes a special kind of care and finesse to craft DJ sets and productions that can convincingly transport listeners to these worlds. I’m very excited to announce that Decoder 「 @__decoder 」, a Berlin-based talent who embodies that same care and finesse, is our next guest for the upcoming 𝗛𝗠𝗔𝘃.𝟳. His minimal, cosmic productions — driven by a rhythmic understanding shaped through years behind a drum kit — have found their home on labels such as »Delsin,« »Molecular,« and Jeff Mills’ own »Axis.« On a more personal note, I’ve often found that Decoder’s tracks have a unique way of lifting Manila dance floors off the ground. If you’ve ever had a tripped-out moment on the floor during one of my sets this year, you may have his futurist sound design to thank. To support Decoder’s expedition to Manila, I’ve invited two local talents whose sets carry the same penchant for sonic world-building: Jem Davis and Deiya. Bookending the night — for opening and closing respectively — will be 𝗛𝗠𝗔 residents Duality and myself. “Usahay Nagadamgo Ako” Print, found objects 4x6ft This piece is made from family photos I scanned and photographed from my last trip to Mindanao. At the center of this piece are the characters of the women on my mother’s side; her, her three sisters and my grandmother — I took a special interest in the oldest sister, who had dreams of stardom, and in pursuit of this, fled secretly to Manila. Family members tell me she became quite the socialite, brushing sides with celebrities, artists, and musicians (who exactly, I do not know). After a short-lived journey in the city, she was forcibly pulled back to her home to take after the family’s legacy in politics, and to become a mother. I reflected a lot on how it must’ve felt to be her position, to experience only a bite of your dreams and aspirations, and be brought back so suddenly into the domesticity of womanhood as it was understood culturally at the time. I imagine the stories told of that exact moment: the clothing torn, the curtains ripped down, the glasses broken. She was a fierce character, she sang beautifully, kept records of all the “cool” music my mother knows now, and was the force behind pushing my mother to join pageants in their home town. I think about the dreams lost, found, negotiated, and bargained. My goal is simple. By making this piece, I hope to honour the women in my life, presented gloriously on a wall for all the things they are. 🌅 This piece is currently exhibiting at @kalawakanspacetime as a part of the group show “Vuhklaan sa Kalawakwhan” curated by @superstarlet_xxx @garapata_ @puralukavega 🐕 thank you!!! 💓

𝙐𝙇𝙏𝙍𝘼𝙎𝙊𝙁𝙏 𝓝𝓞𝓣𝓔𝓢 ⓪⓪③ 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗹𝘆/𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗹𝘆/𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 - 𝘿𝙚𝙞𝙮𝙖 ꨄ 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝓢𝓮𝓪𝓷 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓓𝓲𝓮𝓰𝓸: Hi bbs! Can you believe it’s taken us almost 8 months to find the right person to pick up where we left off? Some might call it lazy, but we’ll say that the best things are worth the wait. :)) Admittedly, it was also a real challenge to think of someone who could follow the (pretty much) perfect mixes by Jorge and Yumi. Lucky for us, timing is everything — and Josh agreed to flip the page. We’ve been watching Josh from afar for quite some time and waiting for the perfect moment to invite them to play one of our events. But since we’re taking our time with Manila, after a dizzying string of LA shows, we selfishly invited him to submit for 𝓝𝓞𝓣𝓔𝓢 instead. Please have a listen. This one’s a welcome departure from the first two iterations. 𝓛𝓲𝓷𝓴 𝓲𝓷 𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓾𝓼𝓾𝓪𝓵. :) ꨄ 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉: It doesn’t take even 10 years for someone to be born into the world to learn how to build walls around them to protect themselves from harm and pain, though this is a necessary act and it’s true that life contains pain, it is also true that it is not just all pain. I find myself reflecting how tenderness is a response to pain and rigidity, one that allows a person to love and forgive and renounce the power of pain over them and persevere regardless. I find that time and time again love is all we really have that’s truly our own, and is the only thing that seems to me is a true expression of freedom. This mix is a concoction of ambient love songs and drones that to me, feels beholding a sunset or being in a warm embrace. For all the grief and sorrow, I look to my side and find a warm hand holding mine. ꨄ 𝑫𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉: This mix is dedicated to everyone who’s ever shown me how soft and full the world can be.
