Devon “Vonnie” Smith (@videovonn ) is an artist and professor of practice in film production at SMU in Dallas, TX. His work is currently up at Kinfolk House (@kinfolkhouse_fw ) in Fort Worth as part of the exhibition “Home Made”. We asked him about his installation process, mixing documentary and archival practice and his ongoing effort in preserving black diasporic narratives.
Check out this collection of cyanotype alternative process photography by Denton based artist, Pablo Alonso Cruz (@pablo.a_cruz ). Cruz explores the in-between space of Mexican-American identity through a photographic practice that draws from historical narratives, cultural memory, and the visual legacy of the Chicano experience. The cyanotype process, with its deep blue tones and handcrafted quality, allows him to reconnect with archival practices and create tactile, intimate reflections on ancestry and representation. Cruz’s work also questions imperial systems informed by historic Casta paintings, interrogating the racial classifications and visual hierarchies imposed on Mexican and Chicano identities. Raul Rodriguez’s short volume thesis photo book, Roots of Amnesia, explores memory through image-making and reflection. Based upon Texas history, the visual language of his photographs draws on a nonlinear understanding of time and events, the presence of symbols embedded in landscape, and the endurance of memory through acts of daily practice. Raul brings to light the hidden stories of Texas such as the Porvenir Massacre, La Merced cemetery, the TX/MX borderwall and the remnants of such events on communities and places across Texas. Using this framework, Rodriguez considers memory not as a static archive, but as a living process shaped by symbols, histories, and survival. A contributing poem by writer, Christopher Carmona, is included in the book.
