Looking for a fun deckbuilder with a twist? Let me introduce Wickens, which is coming to Kickstarter later this year.

OVERVIEW
Each player grabs a Wicken deck box, containing player starting cards and a creature deck. Starting with basic attack and defense items, you collect stronger cards by defeating the creatures - from your own deck or your opponents’! - to flip them over & reveal items. All while also attacking and defending against your fellow Wicken players!

OUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS
✨ The way Wickens uses double-sided cards to deckbuild is pretty neat & something we’d not seen before! I really enjoyed it and got the same vibe that I would get from a TCG without the pre-game deck construction.
💎 Deciding how much to attack and/or defend (they cost mana which is limited), and WHO to attack (Wicken opponent or creature) gave the game an interesting tension.
🔥 We liked that each deck has a different vibe with distinct art to show they come from different realms. The Defence deck (Frith) was my favourite, she takes “defense is the greatest form of offence” very literally!
✨ There could be an imbalance between newer versus experienced players (who’ll know which creatures to attack for which items), but this shouldn’t be an issue if people are considerate (e.g. only attack your own creatures until people get familiar).
💎 Taking cards in and out of sleeves (used to hide the back of the cards) to flip them all the time wasn’t as fiddly as we thought it would be.
VERDICT 👩⚖️
We had a really fun time with this one! If you’re looking for a new deckbuilder with a unique building mechanic (and can handle being a target!) Wickens is definitely one to keep an eye on.

🐸This cute critter can be a very useful companion, allowing you to draw an extra card at the start of your turn! But if for some reason you decided to KILL him (how could you?!), he will curse you with his hypnosis, forcing you to discard cards each turn. But Alex comes prepared with the ability to give bad emblems to your opponent. Kill creatures, gain curses, and throw them at your enemies as Alex the Wasteland Scavenger!🐸

I had the absolute pleasure of having my first game of Wickens with Sam from @deepetchgames . Admittedly he played against himself whilst I got to grips with his game. (Sorry Sam 😬)
Needless to say I had fun and this deck builder has some interesting mechanics and combos.
I’ll be reviewing the solo gameplay and will post my thoughts in the near future.
