🚨 BoardSenseless was provided a loan copy of Pauper's Ladder and the expansion set Pauper's Medley by @bedsitgames so we could see what we think and give you our views. We've not been paid and there's no influence on what we've said This is my 100th review for @ukbg_review_circle and honestly I can't think of a better game to celebrate that milestone with. I was partway through my first game when I dropped a message in the group chat saying "hey this isn't half bad is it?" and I've kinda been a bit hooked on it Truth is I feel like I've been burned by this kind of game before. I wanted to love CoraQuest so much but struggled. Hero Master had a similar look but fell flat... This is so totally refreshing I don't know where to start Gameplay is simple - move your (giant) meeple to an adjacent area, explore from the deck that matches that region or fight a hazard. Find stuff to compl quests, learn recipes or prove your worth as a warrior to earn Virtues - first to 3 wins The cards are square and fit neatly on the map but have enough text to be unambiguous. The deck per region that allows for specialisation of exploring. The different routes to Virtuous victory. It's all so so simple and yet so utterly engaging from your first move. The expansion... well it adds in like 400 cards so you get a completely fresh experience with such a marginally small uplift in learning. Want a massive boat sailing around the map selling stuff? Sure! Massive monolithic Moon Towers to hamper exploration? Why not? Seasonal expansions with Christmas and Halloween characters? Of course! To say this entirely subverted my expectations is a massive understatement. And I played the multiplayer with a friend who messaged to plead for another go before we have to move it on. When the dust settles I'll be seeking a copy out for myself - I can't speak highly enough of it 😍 #ukbgreviewcircle #boardgaming #boardgames #brettspiel #jeudesociété

Wife: “can you put the bins out?” Me: “sorry, I’m spending two hours lining up cards on a table to take a photo” Wife: “you’re sleeping in the shed” Oh, the travails of being an Instagram content creator (whatever one of those is!) This week a new box arrived from @bedsitgames . This box was Paupers Medley - a compendium of expansions for Paupers Ladder. For today’s #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 (run by @nerdygirlgaming ) I’m going to look at the Moon Towers expansion. Firstly, you need to be on board with the dungeon crawling, exploring fighting randomness of Paupers Ladder. If so then let me tell you what extras this expansion adds. 🦜 More birds with cool trained abilities 🧙 More paupers with all new abilities 🃏 All new cards. Luckily I read the instructions before shuffling them in with the base game because you only use the new cards in the expansion! 🟦 Talents. These are powerful ongoing effects for your pauper. Also each time you achieve a virtue you can choose to swap your current talent for a new one 🟥 Curses. Bad effects that can occur. They might, for example, prevent you from using weapons. 🔥 Elementals. These effectively replace the dragons in the base game. 🌕 Moon Towers. All new strong hazards with protectors too and they can give out Moonweed which blocks an entire region deck 🌙 Crescents. Tokens you can collect that give you extra little bonuses 🎲 Golden charm. A friendlier die you get to roll when prompted. I enjoyed this. There was slightly more going on than base Paupers but if you’ve played Paupers then this is only a slight step up. Hard to believe, but this has even more randomness than base Paupers. It’s weird, normally I would shy away from any game with too much randomness but, for some reason, I love this! It takes a bit to get going but soon everyone is gaining virtues. Our game was a close one with both losing players (me included) claiming they could have won on the next couple of turns. Game sent for review purposes by @ukbg_review_circle and will be sent on to the next reviewer (Once I’ve got through the rest of the content!)

For this weeks #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 (run by @nerdygirlgaming ) I’m looking at Crows of Coppershell Bay by @bedsitgames A couple of weeks ago I played and reviewed Paupers Ladder. A game I loved despite the randomness involved. ‘Crows’ is set in the same Brighthelm Universe as ‘Paupers’ but is a miniature version designed for solo play. Full disclosure- I don’t often play solo. My son is >150 games into Final Girl but I prefer to pit my wits against other human beings. In ‘Crows’ you are trying to accrue sixty gems to pay off the titular crows (personally, I think a shotgun would sort the problem) You do this by carrying out activities, playing mini push-your-luck games or going on a quest. 🎏 Activities include fishing, foraging and scavenging. What you gain is determined by the flip of cards. 🍯You can sell these items or convert them to useful potions. 🎡 You can visit the carnival and play games to try and win gems determined by the roll of a die. ⛏️ You can visit the miners guild to be sent on a quest. For this you choose one of three quests cards and then navigate around the caverns on the card. Now when you enter a space you flip a card and it might be a mission or it might be a hazard. Everything is resolved with card draws or die rolls. ⏳ Unfortunately, almost everything you do costs time and you’ve only got 3 days (and 2 nights) to get your gems together. Thematically, this is fantastic. You have XP, and special skills and if it’s nighttime hazards are harder. Even better it all fits inside a little metal tin perfect for carrying around with you. This is a tough challenge (and that’s ignoring the tips to make it harder!!!) and my inability to roll anything but 1’s when fighting or fleeing meant I came up short but, strangely, I feel like I can do better next time! To anyone who has pre ordered games: Hey all, I've been floored with the most awful chest infection - timing couldn't be worse! I'll be back to getting pre orders sent out as soon as I'm better, at the moment I can barely get up off the sodding sofa. Apologies for this, I'm hoping to be back on my feet very soon!

Welcome to Brighthelm. A land of beaches🏖️, forests🌳, mountains ⛰️,swamps🛖, mines⛏️, and cities🏰, You’re about to enter a competition only open to the poorest of the poor, the paupers. This is Paupers Ladder by @bedsitgames . A review for #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 ( run by @nerdygirlgaming ) In Paupers Ladder you are aiming to complete 3 virtues before your fellow paupers. The virtues are completed by accruing enough money, defeating enough hazards, defeating a dragon, gathering the correct ingredients to craft recipes and completing 3 quests. So how do you do that? Quite simply travel around the board and have encounters. Basically, move to a region and flip the top tile of the corresponding deck. In the wildlands you might find ingredients, gambling dens, treasure boxes and any number of hazards. In the city you can shop for new gear or complete a quest (generally needs you to discard something you’ve collected). Hazards are defeated by comparing their strength to yours which is determined from a card from your outcome deck. As you game progresses you can increase your strength with weapons, recipes and potions. As soon as someone has completed their 3rd virtue the game ends, boom! No tiebreaks, no last turns, no totting up scores! ❔❔LOVED this. It was so fun just flipping the next card in the stack with no idea of what was coming 🎲 I’m not normally a fan of randomness and luck but in this I didn’t seem to care! Every flip of a card is a mystery, and all the better for it. Plus the flip of an outcome deck and a roll of the dice just added to the story- “oh look, my raven has just pecked at the toe of an Iron Dragon!” ❤️ There is a game mode where you can have limited health and where unsuccessful encounters with hazards matter but I quite liked the stress free mode, “ooh, I’ve encountered a Golem, whoops I failed to defeat it, never mind I can try again next turn!” What this game needs is more, more, more, and guess what? there is more, more, more in the form of expansions, and what’s more they’re getting sent to me for review!! #excited! This game was sent for review purposes by @ukbg_review_circle and will be sent on to the next reviewer

The final piece of the puzzle! The Tower of Elmarsh has arrived, now to assemble them. Fortunately I've got Doctor Who to keep me company (Castrovalva, should anyone be wondering). See you on the other side!
