After years of using traditional digital altimeters, the Insight feels like a really big step forward. What makes it interesting is not just the GPS tracking itself, but how much useful information it can provide both in the aircraft and under canopy. Having details like ground track, ground speed and distance from the landing area in the aircraft is genuinely useful, especially in unfamiliar dropzones or difficult conditions. Under canopy is where it gets even more interesting. Features like glide ratio, direction to the landing area, distance to the landing area and other live GPS data can add another layer of awareness, and specially in those more cloudy EU DZ’s. One of the biggest problems with GPS altimeters until now has always been battery life. Most GPS devices realistically survive a good weekend of jumping before needing a recharge. For me, this was the thing that held me back from thsoe and Insight completely breaks that curse. Even with GPS functions running, the battery can last up to a month, which honestly changes how practical this type of technology is for everyday skydiving. It does not replace canopy skills, training or judgment — but it is one of the most interesting developments in skydiving technology. Two years of altimeters! Yes indeed. In those two years we've raised the bar with the Insight GPS altimeter and the first publicly available HUD for skydivers. Year three will bring an app and an audible. Stay tuned.
