SAVE THE DATE! Seeing and Recognition: The Paintings of Lee Sherry opens Thursday, May 28th, 6-8 PM at our new location, 126 13th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Curated by David McDonough, Susan Bee, and Zak Vreeland. ☀️🕊️🩷🌿✨
Seeing and Recognition is the first survey show of the paintings of Lee Sherry (1947-2012). Lee was the daughter of founders of The Second City theater troupe. She had close ties to the Language poets and was part of an avant-garde painting circle in SoHo. Lee showed in the 1970s and 1980s but never gained wide recognition or fame. She left behind a mysterious and enigmatic body of work that is particular to her sensibility while channeling centuries of painting interests and special techniques. Rarely seen yet deeply resonant, Sherry’s singular practice feels at once ancient and strikingly fresh. This show introduces her elusive and poetic work to a new audience.
•Seeing and Recognition will be on view through June 21st, 2026.
•The gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays 1-6 PM.

Field of Play is excited to welcome David McDonough as a new member curator with the gallery. Please join us in celebrating @dedume . Thrilled to have you on the team!
David McDonough is an artist and educator based in Queens, NY. His abstractions are often suggestive of natural forms, though they elude any singular reading. He works to balance control and spontaneity in processes that cultivate play, improvisation, invention, and transformation. The intensity of the color palette, along with the varied surface textures, create intimate worlds rich with imaginative possibilities and visual discovery. David has shown in solo and group shows in the NYC area including recent shows with Good Naked Gallery, Field of Play Gallery, Paradice Palase, Studio Archive Project, Tappeto Volante Projects, Equity Gallery, and a solo show at One River School. He has received multiple awards and is a Dedalus Foundation Fellowship nominee. He teaches painting at CUNY College of Staten Island, and is represented by Good Naked Gallery.

Imagine what might materialize on canvas if Marc Chagall and Chaim Soutine had a love child while tripping at the Bronx Botanical Garden, and you’re headed in the right direction.
