Life can be so busy, especially towards the end of the year. I am in a stage that I want to slow down and enjoy the small moments - when I was teenager, I used to fold tsurus (cranes) and collect them or gift them to someone special (I gifted a thousand one time ☺️)

With a sophisticated prose that flows organically, Guerrero exposes a family in all its brokenness while the grieving members also suffer the impact of religion. The story is laden with chaos as Xiomara navigates the messiness of life, from someone left to pick up to pieces in an attempt to feel whole again.
Amidst the injustices and grief, we, alongside Xiomara, learn to set boundaries and move forward. The relationships that can betray us (or support us) and the inner instinct highlight our common vulnerabilities, which layers are unpeeled to add rawness to the storyline.
This novel also touches on American dream and sexuality, while this is not meant to be an easy read, it’s not entirely depressing. Lastly, I personally enjoyed the hopeful tone and character growth.
MY TRAIN LEAVES AT THREE is a tale of grieving full of messiness and angst. This coming-of-age debut feels real and honest.

Castillo explores the complexities of VR (virtual reality), gaming industry and social media, expanding into the intersections between VR world and medical ground (aka VR therapy). I thought that this is a bold and refreshing approach, also very timely and contemporary in a plot loaded with pop and work culture talks. By inviting us to challenge the way we perceive reality, some parts feel dystopian and mostly vibes.
While the author covers themes of wellness, abuse, love, class and technology, she immerses in a more intimate ground through the incorporation of (Philippine) diasporic experiences, which I always appreciate. Castillo’s prose has some presence and it’s able to deliver due impact through very human characters. I think this novel will benefit those who enjoy a more dynamic narrative and personally, the lack of a deeper emotional resonance detracted from a full commitment.
MODERATION is an intuitive read for any gamer, also for readers who are interested in reading about ambitions and futuristic (yet not far-fetched) storyline. It feels inventive and sharp.
