"When she wrote home to her family and friends, they were amazed by what she had managed to grow in America. It had become a standing joke originated by Kiet: She didn't speak the language of the Outer Country, but she understood its dirt."⁣ ⁣ Happy pub day to Davin Malasarn's THE OUTER COUNTRY!⁣ ⁣ We are so excited for you to step into the world of this heartfelt debut novel, a multigenerational story about a queer son, Ben, and the Thai immigrant family, Kamron, Siripon, and Manda, that shapes him. Their unraveling lives examine how love and inheritance travel across geographical borders, physical bodies, and the passing of time.⁣ ⁣ One of the many parts you'll encounter in this story is Manda's garden, built from what she carried with her overseas: seeds sewn into her hem that she carefully tended to in her new home. To honor this garden, we asked early readers to share their inheritances, building our own digital garden. From holiday traditions to Shiva Lingam stones, the many personal inheritances hold true to our reflections that inheritances come from places far and wide. Once they take root, they grow in ways we can't always predict.⁣ ⁣ We hope you find glimpses of yourself throughout this story. THE OUTER COUNTRY is available wherever books are sold.

🐚 She's coming out of her shell and she's doing just fine! Many congratulations to Pulitzer Prize finalist, CLAM DOWN by Anelise Chen.⁣ ⁣ “We've all heard the one about waking up as a cockroach—but what if a crisis turned you into a clam?”⁣ ⁣ After the dissolution of her marriage, a writer is transformed into a "clam" via typo after her mother keeps texting her to "clam down." The funny if unhelpful command forces her to ask what it means to "clam down" during crises—to retreat, hide, closeup, and stay silent. Idiomatically, we are said to "clam up" when we can't speak, and to "come out of our shell" when we reemerge, transformed.⁣ ⁣ Using a genre-defying structure and written in novelistic prose that draws from art, literature, and natural history, Anelise unfolds a complex story of interspecies connectedness, in which humans learn lessons of adaptation and survival from their mollusk kin. While it makes sense in certain situations to retreat behind fortified walls, the choice to do so also exacts a price. What is the price of building up walls? How can one take them back down when they are no longer necessary?⁣ ⁣ You can order a copy of CLAM DOWN via the link in our bio.

Solidarity wasn’t a slogan for the Bund. It was a strategy for survival and a vision for the future, kept fiercely alive and projected globally even from the horrific epicenters of the Holocaust. "The Bund were live or die believers in solidarity, to the point where—during the great deportation from the Warsaw ghetto, when 90 percent of the ghetto's inmates were deported to Treblinka—the Bund was sending illegal radio messages to their representative in Britain demanding that Mahatma Gandhi be freed from British jail." The Jewish Labor Bund understood that true victory would require working together and fighting for each other across trades, cities, and borders. They were committed to improving the lives of workers everywhere. Today is May Day, and we hope your feed is full of calls to action. Here's one more: Watch the full video of Molly Crabapple's conversation with Morgan Bassichis at the link in our bio to hear more badass Bundist dispatches from HERE WHERE WE LIVE IS OUR COUNTRY.

“In THE WHITE HOT, a woman, a mother, a daughter of immigrants, does the unthinkable: She leaves. April Soto has inherited a legacy of seeking from foremothers who had to ‘escape in order not to die.’ With unflinching and embodied prose, Quiara Alegría Hudes brings us along April’s wrenching and immersive journey. The novel’s epistolary narrative eschews ‘right vs. wrong’ to raise a more labyrinthine set of questions about rage, duty, and motherhood, to which there are no comfortable answers. At the heart of this masterful work is the most uncomfortable question of all: ‘How could love look like leaving?’” — 2026 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction jury citation for The White Hot by Quiara Alegría Hudes (@oneworldbooks )

Listen up, readers! We asked One World author Davin Malasarn about the music behind the world of THE OUTER COUNTRY and he delivered! From the psychedelic guitars of Khruangbin's Kern Dala to the galactic sounds of Björk's Hyperballad, the music on the official THE OUTER COUNTRY playlist is the perfect collection to set you up before entering the lives of Ben, Manda, Siripon, and Kamron. Give the playlist a listen at the link in our bio. "Siripon took him back, pulling away the wrappings so that his skin could touch hers again. 'I want to bring him home,' she said. 'Look at us. We left as two, but we'll return as four.' She closed her eyes, letting herself slip away into sleep." -THE OUTER COUNTRY, out May 5, 2026
