New work for @nadezhdacult POPPY is a song about the shared experience of not being fed by the garden that grew you, but delves more specifically into the pain of feeling shut out just as you finally break through, reaching the sun before the soil. The Australian term “tall poppy syndrome” describes the ostracizing of those who achieve public success, being met with criticism and resentment, and getting cut down in favor of a false equality. In Japan, a similar term is “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down,” both themes we’ve explored through this song. We wanted to invoke a nostalgic, if niche, point of reference going along with the song’s theme of family dynamics. We were inspired by vintage Corningware / Corelle dishes and made a little twist on the Blue Cornflower design — using poppies in place of the traditional floral pattern, as well as the semi-blown out plate backstamp for the type treatment.
