After a courageous 6-month battle with pancreatic cancer, my dad peacefully passed the morning of Friday, March 6th, surrounded by family.
If you knew my dad, you knew everything about him was big. Big hugs, big voice, big sneezes (they’d make everyone in the room jump), and a big love for life. He wasn’t afraid to show affection and we’d joke that he loved us a little TOO much. He was a fun and loving grandfather to my kids and unknowingly dubbed me a great rap name should I ever change careers- “young mommy”. (OG mom being my mom.)
I’ll remember my dad as someone who worked tirelessly to provide for his family and loved my mother deeply. It’s from him who I inherited a love for the arts and travel and I wish we could have gone on many more trips together. He loved nature and music and even took up clarinet lessons after retirement despite being the oldest student by decades. His favorite place was being outside and gardening or tending to the many trees he planted around his house. He had an incredible green thumb and took great joy in “rescuing” my houseplants from my neglect. But what he loved most was just being around people and talking about anything and everything under the sun.
There’s so much more to say. It won’t be the same without his big presence but we know he is looking down on us from above and is finally with our Creator. The last six months felt both incredibly long and painful but also it wasn’t nearly enough time together. We miss you so much 아빠 and we’ll see you again one day soon.

One of my goals this year is to work with more AAPI talent and to help lift and raise our community and voices. Our representation is still so few and far between that it’s so important when we *do* get the spotlight, we’re presented in the best way possible. Loved working with the talented violinist 🎻 @hyeyungsolyoon and longtime colleague 📸 @shirleyshotyu for these beautiful portraits! HMU by me @debiedoesmakeup . Retouching by @kwokfaih

I still don’t know how to put into words how I’ve been feeling the past few weeks. Basically I’m not ok. It’s been a lot and yet I still realize how privileged I am. I want to celebrate our identities and our communities so I put together this compilation of my favorite Asian-owned businesses, topped off with some of my favorite AAPI women to follow on Instagram. There are so many more, so I’m thinking of creating more slideshows like this. Please feel free to share and also comment your favorite BIPOC-owned businesses and brands below! #StopAsianHate #hateisavirus
