It’s official! On Tuesday, November 15th I was sworn in as the @torontodsb Trustee for Ward 7 Parkdale—High Park. It was incredibly meaningful to be joined by members of my family, community and campaign team, all of whom were integral in arriving at this moment. Thank you again, Parkdale—High Park for the honour. Now we get to work!

Encouraging to see the Board of Health prioritize positive childhood experiences to improve lifelong health outcomes. In my deputation, I raised concerns about school environments and the potential rise in adverse child experiences linked to Ministry of Education legislation—especially impacts of adversity, poverty, and racism on equity-denied groups. I support aligning Toronto Public Health work with the Ontario Early Adversity and Resilience Framework and was glad to see amendments from Councillors @bravodavenport and @lilychengto on data collection and collaboration with school boards. Thank you to the parents who spoke. Strengthening conditions for children and families across Toronto is essential.

This morning I stood with families and educators from the west side of our ward—joining thousands province-wide in today’s day of action for public education. Together, we kept trustees on the ballot. That win shows what collective action can do. Now we keep the pressure on Premier Ford to #FundOurSchools! Grateful to stand alongside MPP @alexangilmour in this fight. Keep the momentum going—join us Monday, May 4 at 7:30pm for an Education Town Hall with a strong lineup of MPPs and advocates. #RedForEd #OntEd #PoliceFreeSchools #SaveOSAP

In another undemocratic move, the provincial government limited committee hearings on Bill 101 to just one day—restricting public input and scrutiny of sweeping changes to our education system. I joined Education Critic Chandra Pasma and stakeholders at Queen’s Park to raise concerns about how this bill that weakens governance is being pushed forward. At the Standing Committee on Social Policy, we heard clearly that the Minister did not consult with @etfoeducators , @osstf_feeso , or CUPE—despite the bill’s impact on students and staff. Equally concerning was the Minister’s hostile tone toward union leaders during the hearing. This proposal for ministerial power to expand while opportunities for input narrow, raises even more concern about whether the voices of students, families, and educators will be respected at all if this legislation passes. #Onted #Bill101

Today I joined neighbours in Roncesvalles for the annual spring cleanup. With great weather and a strong turnout, we came together to care for the main street. It was nice to see students pitching in and earning volunteer hours along the way. Thanks to @roncesvillage for organizing and providing supplies, and to the @cityofto for supporting waste collection. With storefronts, streets, and flowerbeds now refreshed, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when we show up together—and how small, shared efforts help keep our neighbourhoods looking their best. #cleantorontotogether #springcleanup

We are thrilled to have the support of our elected School Board Trustee, Debbie King, for the upcoming Power Hour on April 28th, from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Creating a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant Parkdale Village is a community effort. Having Trustee King join us on the street ensures our local schools and families are part of the conversation as we work to improve our district for everyone. Let’s make an impact, together!

Good indoor air quality is essential to whole health—for students, workers, tenants, and communities across our city. Earlier this month, I sat down with advocates from @cleanindoorairto and Board of Health Chair, Councillor Moise, to discuss practical steps the City can take to improve air quality in more of our shared spaces. This builds on CIATO’s successful push for a comprehensive review of indoor air quality guidance and responsibilities by our Medical Officer of Health—and on the motion I helped deliver alongside colleagues in 2023 to reduce the spread of respiratory illness in TDSB schools. We know what works. By working together and acting on evidence, we can deliver healthier, safer spaces for everyone. #CleanAirTO #PublicHealth

Whose achievement is Bill 101 putting first? Cutting TDSB trustees from 22 to 12—and slashing the honorarium from $24K to $10K—doesn’t just reduce numbers. It risks weakening representation and the work trustees do to address disparities in student outcomes tied to poverty, racial discrimination, ableism, and other systemic barriers. This is about whose voices are heard—and whose children are set up to succeed. I touch on this in my CBC Here and Now interview but there's so much more to share. If representation and equity matter to you, now is the time to act. Public input shapes what happens next—and silence leaves decisions to others. 👉 Submit your feedback: https://www.regulatoryregistry.gov.on.ca/proposal/53794 #onted #bill101

Bill 101 does nothing to support students and families. How I see it, its just a power grab from this government to exert more control over our schools. Here to help me break it down is Debbie King, TDSB trustee for Parkdale-High Park. Let us know what you think of Bill 101 in the comments.

We can’t stay quiet as our public schools become less resourced and less equitable. I’m hearing directly from students, families, and education workers about the real impacts in our classrooms—that’s why collective action matters right now. 📞 Join a province-wide Phone Zap 🗓 Tuesday, April 14 ⏰ 7:30–8:30 PM Together, we’ll call elected officials and push for the funding and governance our schools need. Scripts will be provided—just bring your voice. Every call sends a message. 🔗 Register (link in stories) #PublicEducation #Onted #TakeAction
