Local voices matter. When buses run late, programs are cut, or a child needs help, families deserve someone who gets their community. That’s why school board trustees are essential. They’re neighbours who listen, ask hard questions, and keep education decisions close to home. If the Ontario government eliminates trustees, we lose more than oversight – we lose local democracy in our schools. Keep education close to home. Sign the petition today at mocracyIsNotOutdated.ca.

Local voices matter. When buses run late, programs are cut, or a child needs help, families deserve someone who gets their community. That’s why school board trustees are essential. They’re neighbours who listen, ask hard questions, and keep education decisions close to home. Ontario’s schools work best when decisions are made close to home. Elected trustees keep education accountable, transparent, and responsive to local needs – from Kenora to Kingston. Eliminating them means silencing communities and centralizing power at Queen's Park. Local democracy isn’t outdated – it’s how we build better schools for our kids. It was a productive day for OPSBA’s trustee-led work groups today as they met to discuss Bill 101’s impacts on the sector, the upcoming Municipal and School Board Elections, adult and continuing education, school food programs, e-learning, funding, provincial advocacy and child care regulations. Many thanks to Paul Cox of the Ontario Association of Adult and Continuing Education School Board Administrators, Jon Proctor of the @oelc.caso , and Sarah Keyes of the Ontario Chapter of the @chsf_canada for sharing their valuable time and knowledge. Despite current challenges, Ontario’s dedicated local trustees continue to be your community education champions, keeping decision-making close to home and bringing the concerns of families and schools to the provincial level through our association.

@townofcaledon Councillor @dave4caledon speaks eloquently on March 30 as he introduces a motion in support of the continuation of the role of local, democratically elected school trustee in Ontario. Thank you for your praise of local @peelschools Trustee Stan Cameron! 🙌

We remember Stephen Lewis today, always a strong supporter of public education. Lewis knew that an educated world is a more just world. He spent his life fighting to ensure that knowledge and opportunity weren’t privileges, but human rights. Today we remember and honour a true advocate for the next generation.

We are now 31 days from municipal and school board election nominations opening across Ontario on May 1. Let Deb Hutton, a Newstalk 1010 radio host and former Chief of Staff to Premier Mike Harris, explain why this current situation is "crazy." “No legislation, no hint what is happening. Because if the supervisors are still in place, there’s no school board. it’s absolutely crazy and I don’t understand what the government’s doing. I don’t understand why they don’t have a plan and when you start to lose me on school board governance, you’ve lost a lot of people.” #DemocracyIsNotOutdated

Newstalk 1010 host Deb Hutton on Moore in the Morning earlier today after decisions affecting many families were made at the Toronto Catholic DSB with seemingly no public consultation: “I think this is a terrible idea without any consultation. Who do you complain to? It was an unelected… and unaccountable supervisor… it’s absolutely crazy. And I don’t understand what the government’s doing. I don’t understand why they don’t have a plan. And when you start to lose me on school board governance, you’ve lost a lot of people.”

We are receiving so much support from Ontario‘s municipalities. Thank you to each council member who is supporting local school board governance and community voice in our public education system. Democracy is not “outdated”. It’s how we make sure every community, from Kenora to Kingston, has a say in shaping the schools that shape our kids. Elected trustees mean open meetings, transparent budgets, and accountability you can see. Eliminating them silences the only direct, elected voice families have in public education. Once that’s gone – it’s gone for good. Tell the Ontario government to keep education decisions close to home and protect our democratically-elected local school board trustees at mocracyisnotoutdated.ca.

Listen to Toronto Councillor @joshmatlow discuss his Trustee colleague Shelley Laskin’s incredible service to her local community and the TDSB here, at last night’s Council meeting. Thank you to Toronto Council for passing a motion in support of the role of trustees! (See second image) Trustees are the voice of local communities and we know education decisions belong close to home. Elected trustees mean open meetings, transparent budgets, and accountability you can see. Eliminating them silences the only direct, elected voice families have in public education. Once that’s gone – it’s gone for good.
