HELP US SPREAD THE WORD & SAVE THE GARDEN OAKS THEATER!
From our friends at @arthousehtx :
Join us on Tuesday, April 28 at the DeLUXE Theater (@atthedeluxe ) for a special evening dedicated to preserving one of Houstonâs historic cinema landmarks. This fundraiser, film screening, and community visioning session comes at a critical moment, with only a month to secure the future of the Garden Oaks Theater.
We are launching an urgent capital campaign to save and reopen the theater as a nonprofit cinema and community space. Through Arthouse Houston, we are calling on individuals, organizations, and supporters of all sizes to contribute to the Preservation Fund. This is a pay-what-you-can event.
All donations are tax-deductible and will go directly toward the purchase and restoration of this beloved cultural site.
RSVP LINK IN BIO
The evening will feature the Houston premiere of The Last Picture Shows, a new documentary by Rustin Thompson, with the filmmaker in attendance. The film traces a journey across the American West, uncovering the fading and resilient legacy of small-town movie theaters.
This event will also include:
* a community-led information and visioning session, inviting attendees to imagine the future of the Garden Oaks Theater together.
* Local vendors, including Slated Cinema Magazine, and a DVD swap hosted by @death2streaming ,
* 16mm film projections
* Banner and sign-making activities
* Drinks and popcorn
This is more than a film screening. Itâs a call to action.
Join us in building a future where Houstonâs historic theaters continue to thrive, and communities come together to share and create stories. đĽ

The evening will feature the Houston premiere of The Last Picture Shows, a new documentary by Rustin Thompson, with the filmmaker in attendance. The film traces a journey across the American West, uncovering the fading and resilient legacy of small-town movie theaters. Blending contemporary footage with reflections inspired by Peter Bogdanovichâs The Last Picture Show, the documentary offers a poignant look at an industry in transition, and a reminder of the vital role cinemas play as spaces for connection, memory, and community.
In addition to the screening, the event will include a community-led information and visioning session, inviting attendees to imagine the future of the Garden Oaks Theater together. Congrats to all those people that got a little statue, but now itâs time for to announce the winner that everyone is waiting for, the winner of the first ever Death2Streaming Oscars Ballot competitionđ
It was a tight race, even without any of our competitors dissing century old art forms (as far as we are aware) but we are proud to announce that @sebimendoza has won the competition and the gift basket.
Missing only a staggering 3 categories, Sebastian was not here to mess around. Fun fact: he was also one of the filmmakers that screened with us on Saturday. His film âPerfect Soundâ played in the 2 pm slot!
Thank you so much to everyone who participated! We canât have swaps without you and if you filled out a ballot that means you showed up. We do this because we know weâre not the only ones craving community, and pouring over the ballots last night reminded us of that fact. đđ
Also a major thank you to the organizations that donated to us for the gift basket. @cactus_music@slatedcinema@theriveroakstheatre@thecoffeehousehtx you all helped to make this a truly special competition!
DVDs and movies forever!
And weâve reached the third film on our schedule!
đ Perfect Sound đ
A Film by @sebimendoza
A collision of sight and sounds help to create this frenetic atmosphere that feels uniquely specific to the medium of cinema. A wildly impressive outing from a filmmaker that uses every tool in their bag.
This will be the final film of the day, so you wonât want to miss it at 2 PM. In fact, you might as well stay for the whole event. Itâs from 11 am - 3 pm this Saturday 3/14.
Cast and Crew:
Joshua McClelland @joshua_backup6912
Arnau Brotons
Darcy Lally
Elia Valdes
Our next movie on the schedule is a video game adaptation (in a broader sense)
đž The Last Game đž
Directed by @tokoware
An existential exploration about the connectedness of the human experience told through a womanâs conversation with the artificial intelligence in a video game.
So yeah, it gets a little freaky deaky. đž
This is in the 1pm slot, be there or be pong?
Also, show up for the whole event from 11 am - 3 pm on 3/14 at @thecoffeehousehtx
Written, Directed, and Edited by @tokoware
Produced by Robert Garcia @townhallcreative
Cast:
Leslie Betancout as Penelope @l3slieeeeeee
Robert Garcia as Pong
Ricardo Betancourt as Narrator
Our first film on the schedule is a funny one!
đ¨ Curity Boyz đ¨
Directed by @officialdiegogarcia
A hilarious mockumentary about a day in the life two security officers, if youâre bold enough to call them that.
Itâs a laugh riot.
Come check it out on 3/14! The film starts at 12 PM!
