Best production of Shakespeare I’ve ever seen in my life. Everyone knows how tragic HAMLET is, but who knew it was also so funny? Many, many thanks to Noa for all the work she did in securing the tickets for us! So incredibly worth it.
A few thoughts about last night’s access experience at CHESS on Broadway (@chessbway ).
Meanwhile, I’ve noticed TDF/TAP’s (@tdfnyc ) open captions tend to consistently be a beat AFTER the actual dialogue and lyrics, which is incredibly frustrating. (Although I do wonder whether this is deliberate as not to ruin any surprises for the hearing patrons because, clearly, they are the priority here. And, yes, this is being said with a heavy dose of sarcasm.)
The vast majority of Deaf and HoH people I’ve discussed this with have expressed a preference for captions that are a beat early rather than a beat late. As it is, by the time we understand what’s happening, it’s too late to see it happen. I really do hope they reconsider their approach.
Very grateful for and impressed by the access and house management team at CHESS. They do their job very well, so I want to be sure to recognize them for that.
Now, I’m off to see HAMLET at BAM (@bam_brooklyn ) with open captions. Wish me luck!
I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Nicholas Christopher and Hannah Cruz are simply phenomenal with extremely well-deserved Tony nominations. And it was a lovely memory to sit in the same section of the same theater from where I watched my very first Broadway show, THE BOY FROM OZ, way back in 2004.
I had a quintessential, absolutely lovely New York day: first, I met a Deaf KPop band (@big_ocean.official ) after a talk they gave at my work, then I had dinner with good friends (@jbaez811 and Sean, who’s not on here) outside in Bryant Park as the sun was setting. Finally, I closed out the day with a fantastic Broadway show (@andjulietbway ) featuring a hysterical and touching performance by my BIG RIVER cast mate, Jeannette Bayardelle (@jbayardelle ). Many thanks to @tdfnyc and @handsonsign for providing the interpreter access, including the always phenomenal @foodtravelterp and @frepez , who I always adore watching, advised by the extraordinary @k.aaronlozano . I also saw and reconnected with a few dear friends I haven’t seen in a long while (@emilysimm and @milliesimm ). These are the days that remind me how lucky I am and how much I love my life.
